Yosemite Battery Drain

I have been using Yosemite Beta for about a month. My battery drained incredibly fast using the Beta. I suspected battery issues would improve after updating to the public release of Yosemite yesterday. The issue has not resolved, however. Just in the last minute and a half of typing this question, my battery percentage has dropped 3%!

When you update, you get the notification that you need to optimize your mac to prevent excessive battery drain, but there is no description of how to optimize within Yosemite or on the web. How does one optimize their mac for Yosemite?

Apple, get on this!

I have the same issue with Yosemite, but I have improved greatly the battery life disabling every new feature in the OS (notifications, iDrive, etc) and unused services and apps. I also have done a SMC reset.

Checking Coconut Battery I've seen that the battery power usage is lower than with Mountain Lion, about 8.1 W instead of 8.9 W average, very very low (less than a half of a low-consumption light bulb). However, it drains the battery faster than the older OS. Perhaps what happens is that the Yosemite's battery information is more accurate. I will test it in real use these days to see what happens.

I'm experiencing similar battery drain. Yesterday, Mid-2012 MBP lost 30% while in standby for about an hour. EtreCheck report pasted below. Could you please advise how to optimize to improve battery life? Additionally, do you think it will be possible to experience the 5-6+ hrs battery life I had pre-Yosemite? Thanks in advance. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Problem description:

Battery Drain after Updating to Yosemite Public Release (14A389). Problem initially detected after updating to Beta 6. Battery drains 1-2% every few mins with no apps using significant data.

[Note: As I type, Chrome is reportedly using significant energy despite only ONE tab being open— an apple forum thread about this Yosemite battery drain— and Two enabled extensions that are not in use (Hangouts & Evernote Web Clipper.]

Typing this description has resulted in a 3% decrease in battery life.

Oct 20, 2014 8:40 AM in response to Csound1

Csound1 can you help me make sense of this report?

I have MBA 13' and after the update the battery life dropped from 12 to only 6-7 hours.

The CPU performance levels are low(~1%). I don't know what possibly can cause nearly 50% battery life decrease.

Thank you!

got rid of all of them and turned off Airmail. The reason I didn't delete it is simple - I like it way more than regular mail and I didn't have ANY problems with it before. I guess it's just not optimised for Yosemite yet. So it's off for now, and let's see how it goes. Will post later about the results

There is an Airmail Beta that proclaims compatibility with 10.10, but it is only a beta at the moment.

Same issue with me. Upgraded Mavericks and went from 10 hours to 4 hours battery life. So I did a clean install last night and am currently losing about 20% battery per hour when off the charger. A full run takes me down in about 4.5~5 hours. Nothing much running...

Problem description:

Battery Drains to empty in 4.5 hours vs Mavericks 10 hours. Before clean install, battery drained to empty in 4 hours.

But you shouldn't have to turn off any of the functions of your OS to get decent battery life. Apple needs to fix this. This thread shows there are MANY people out there with this issue and that battery life is nowhere near living up to what they advertise for Yosemite.

I have the same frustration with my iPhone 5S that experiences awful battery drain when having Siri and the full gyroscope motion features activated. I have to have both turned off to get decent battery that lasts a day. These are issues that should be fixed so we can use the full capabilities of the OS.

I am having the same issue - Mid-2014 MB Pro with Retina, on Mavericks I was getting about 7 hours of battery life, after upgrading to Yosemite the battery life is now only 2 hours. I am hearing fans I never heard before, so clearly something is running non-stop. But my issue seems a little different than many of the posted info. The top processes running on my system are all OS X root processes, with the biggest offender being launchd.

Anyone know what launchd does and why it would run non-stop? I also noticed it writes to disk a lot too.

Here are my EtreCheck details if helps any - I have a very lean install right now with little running:

This is not the answer for the masses, however if you don't want to wait for the next major update, this will fix it.

I also want to state that its important to note we are speaking of Macbook air 2014, I would not install this on anything later than

a macbook air 2011, thats the falloff point for advanced power management they introduced into the macbook air lineup.

1.Get an external hard drive and label is "time machine", run a time machine backup

2. get a seperate hard drive and label it "apple data" and move ALL documents, music photo and so on to that drive.

3. Run a clean install of Yosemite, move you data back and use the native apple applications for 1-3 days to get an accurate reading

on battery life.

4. Once you determine battery life has improved (it will help), slowly go app by app and see if they have updates for Yosemite and install the

your critical apps only, more monitoring more testing. Don't re-install ANY application that does not have an update for Yosemite.

This has worked for me every time apple releases a major OSX update.

Same here. I used to be able to use my macbook pro retina late 2013 for at least 8 hours, starting my workday around 9am and leaving at 5pm with approximatively 25% to 15% left. Now I switch to Yosemite and I can barely make it to 2pm...

The battery tells me I have 4 hours left when at 100%, I was fully charged today and my battery charge dropped by 40% in less than 2 hours... (Time on battery: 1:20, remaining 2:12 with charge at 58%).

Before I upgraded to Yosemite, everything was fine. I'll wait a little to see Apple answer but I might go back to Mavericks in a few weeks in problem not solve... That battery drain can't be good for the battery.

Here is my report. I'm having the same problem as other users are reporting. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Problem description:

upgraded to yosemite and battery life is significantly shorter than was with Mavericks.
