Could not open iPhoto from dock or launch pad after installing Yosemite. Went into the iPhoto application in applications and clicked on MAC OS and then clicked on iPhoto. iPhoto then opened but when I closed the exec window iPhoto closed.

Which version of iPhoto do you have installed? If it is not iPhoto 9.5.1 or later, it will not run on Yosemite. Update to the most recent release iPhoto 9.6. from the AppStore. This update makes iPhoto compatible with Yosemite.

Did you ever try to click the iPhoto application icon in Applications? The Dock icon and Launchpad may be linked to older versions.
What happens, when you try to launch iPhoto directly by clicking the icon?
Or launching it with the options key held down to create a new, empty library for testing?
I tried both suggestions but could not open iPhoto.

Does iPhoto launch from a different user account? Try the Guest user.
Why did you open iPhoto from inside the application bundle in the first place? Have you done that previously also?

Was able to open iPhoto in my account when I went to the application list, right clicked on the iPhoto application then chose Show Package Contents, then clicked on Contents and then clicked on MAC OS which then opened iPhoto.
This is the only way I have been able to open it.

Problem solved.
I opened up MAC APP Store and clicked on purchased apps and then re-installed iPhoto.
Going to the App Store and clicking on "Purchases" solved my problem.
The App was still downloading and had not installed despite what the iPhoto said.
Thanks to info here re: going to purchases, I found the same thing ... it's still downloading a large (1.14 GB) app. The problem is with the App Store site. It says iPhoto is installing when in fact it's really still downloading.
what if in my App purchases indicates my iPhoto is paused and waiting.. I can't click on anything and it won't let me restart it or delete any of them.. as you can see it says my download for mavericks is paused.. how do i make this work?
also when i try and open my old iPhoto (the only one I have) it brings this up, then after i click on the search app store it brings up the new iPhoto 9.6 and it won't allow me to click the install button, (it flashes immediately "installing" then goes back to "Install" like this,
but again it won't allow me to click on it..
before when I tried it I clicked "get" and "Install" but it paused itself some how and now I can't get it to un-pause..
Backup your iPhoto library and drag the iPhoto application to the trash (wait to empty the trash) and try the install from the app store again
