FileVault stuck on "Encryption Paused"

After upgrading my MPB to Yosemite, I elected to turn on FileVault. In the Security & Privacy panel of System Preferences, the status shows "Encryption paused" and the text under the progress bar reads, "Connect power adapter to resume encryption." Trouble is, I am running from the power adapter!

I have rebooted and tried another power adapter. The battery icon in the menu bar correctly changes from battery to power adapter as I connect and disconnect. However, the encryption status never changes. I have left the machine running overnight with no change.

Any ideas?

Hello,

I have Sierrra. Enabled filevault and it got stuck.

Solution
:Open Terminal -> type: " sudo fdesetup disable " then paste your password or recovery keyword.

I pasted my recovery keyword and voila it worked again and the process was finished in a few hours :-D

Yay! 🙂

Thank me later 😉

Well, I finally got rid of the same problem, after two long and slow years.

I tried everything you guys and all the other internet gurus suggested. All the tricks, all the command lines, rituals, whichcraft, prayers ... but no recipe was able to get my stuck FileVault back on encrypting. Always the status was the same: pending.

I couldn't do a Time Machine backup, the process was always stopped at the middle, due to an unknown corestoraged error. Shame on you FileVault!

Then, I gave up and solved the problem for good:

a)I copied all the important files to a external HD

b) erased Macintosh HD

c) installed a new copy of OS X (without FileVault of course)

d) upgraded to El Captain

e) copied back my files from external HD

Now I am very happy: my MB looks and sounds new.

The battery is alive and well. And it's faster than never!

No more fdesetup status in my life!!!

FREE YOURSELF FROM FILEVAULT TOO!

I had the same problem. one of the below fixes worked (though just a little different)

situation:

had encryption going on and showed 6 hours to finish for a 300 GB HDD on mid 2012 13" mbp runnin 10.11.6

needed to install bootcamp so wanted to stop/cancel. here is what i had to do

1. used the command "

diskutil cs revert /Volumes/title_drive -passphrase" from this site

https://derflounder.wordpress.com/2011/11/23/using-disk-utility-to-unlock-or-dec rypt-your-filevault-2-encrypted-boot-dri…

that stopped the encryption but the status changed to 'paused'

2. unplugged the power cord - resulting in status changed to 'plug in power to resume encryption"

3. plugged the power back in - resulting in conversion status changing to "Converting (backward)" and reversion state as "Reverting". Time left 31 minutes (the same amount of time that was already spent on encryption.

i was using "diskutil cs list" command on terminal to check the status.
