Magic Mouse disconnects

My Magic Mouse disconnects (turns off) after 5/10 seconds after connecting it to my Mac. I have to lift the mouse and click the mouse button in order to turn in on again.

I've had a look at some other posts but none of them seem similar to mine. The mouse rarely reconnects itself, you have to physically lift and shake (press) the mouse in order for the green light to light up again and the mouse to connect.

The mouse seems to disconnect (faster) when not in use (even for 1 second). If I keep using the mouse (fast moving the pointer) it seems to keep connected. I've tested with multiple batteries (Mac indicates 100% charged). It came with my 2012 Imac OSX 10.10.

Does anyone recognize this problem, or (even better) does anyone know how to solve it?

Hi,

I had a very similar issue with to a two magic mouses (magic mice?) blue-toothed to two different Macs.

After attempting many different solutions (on/off Bluetooth, computer, mouse, exchange/replace batteries, resets of all types...) This worked for me in both cases:

(1) Take out the cover (lid) of the battery case of the mouse.

(2) Bend the cover inwards (yes, bend the metal).

(3) Put the cover back in. Done / solved.

Apparently, loose batteries often cause the issue. In the above way, the cover exercises enough pressure on the batteries to keep them in place. You could use paper placed under the cover, but it will be a hassle and fall out every time.

I was reading this elsewhere on the web, and first doubted this would work, but tried and to my amazement it worked.

As the question keeps getting "I have this question too"s, I thought to share.

Note: Obviously, there can be other/very different reasons for Bluetooth connections to fail, but this reason (loose batteries) was it for me in 2/2 cases (different mice) for me.

Hope this helps someone.

Again, didn't mean to offend you...but start a reply with a patronizing line like: "Your best guess is wrong." and expect at least a bit of sarcasm in the reply.

I understand that we're all in the same boat here...and believe you me - it's twice as hard living here in Macedonia and experiencing the "customer service" at the local Apple representative/re-seller. There's also the issue with my iMac (that I've bought here) being of poorer quality to my MacBook Pro (which I purchased in the States), but that's a discussion for a different topic altogether...that I don't feel like getting into right now.

Sorry again for the sarcasm, I'm just too frustrated wasting the time until my mouse reconnects...it takes ages to design stuff.

Hope you accept my apology.

My best guess remark was tongue-in-cheek. But, that doesn't often come across in text.

My frustration, and doubts, came about around the time they started with iPad, iPhone and iOS devices in general. Thats when they seemed to get away from their focus on actual computers. I hope they are conscientious with the Mac Pro. It those start to fail, it could really hurt their reputation.

In any case, Apple doesn't seem to read these boards. They seem to simply be a user forum where we can try to help each other from our personal experience.

I had previously paired the mouse with another device (windows PC, tablets, etc). Today i just noticed when the mouse gets disconnected, it connects with another device. Yes, it moved the mouse pointer on the other device.

So I had the mouse unpaired from all other devices - that is, removed all traces of pair records. The magic mouse now stays connected with my macbook for the past few hours.

While the magic mouse shouldn't try to pair with other devices when it's already connected with a macbook, but it appears to attempt to.

Apple should be reading this.

To all of you with your Magic Mouse magically disconnecting here's my solution (so far I "fixed" two MM).

the issue as some of you posted is the batteries loosing contact at some point on the Positive side of them, my two MM have a flimsy Positive contact and if I push them with a pen or something they will move from the bottom, not sure if this is by design or flaw, so when I move the MM to another place of my desk it disconnects from my MBP when it "hits" the desk.

So I taped four or five layers of scotch tape to the bottom of the batteries compartment on the Positive side for both of the batteries from side to side not affecting the Negative side. This will prevent the batteries from bouncing to the bottom of the mouse's battery compartment, I know this is upside down when I use the mouse but it keeps the batteries from moving and losing contact with the mouse.

If you notice it works better after doing the above recommendation but at some point it disconnects when hitting the you can do some layering of scotch tape on the inside of the battery lid, don't do it too tick or it will bend the aluminum lid. Be careful of not affecting the Laser.

Hope this makes sense and work for you too.

Thanks! This fixed my problem.

To get this to work I did the following:

1. Turned off Bluetooth

2. Turned off Wifi

3. Turned on Bluetooth (setup pairing before turning Wifi back one)

4. Turned on Wifi

After step 3, the bluetooth prompted me to pair with my magic mouse. It seems like the Wifi issue mentioned earlier could be conflicting with the bluetooth. Disabling Wifi solved my problem.

Using a late version 2009 iMac running latest El Capitan.

I tried all sorts of solutions mentioned here BUT the one that worked after months of bluetooth connectivity loss was as follows:

Go to Finder>Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences>com.apple.Bluetooth.plist

Remove or delete Bluetooth.plist

Restart your Apple iMac and a new plist is generated and voilà problem solved.

No more Bluetooth connectivity loss.

Apple phone support talked me through this after scouring various forums with solution that didn't work for me.

I have a mid 2011 iMac running 10.11.3. About two years ago I had issues, tried some of the things mentioned in this thread, and eventually got a new mouse on eBay. I think Magic Mouse is great - tracks accurately and smoothly even on my old oak desk (with plenty of "character"), lets me customize many features, comfortable in my hand. Recently my Magic Mouse started acting up again, after I got the low battery alert. I changed the batteries and it kept losing connection an/or not scrolling correctly. Here is what I have found: (1) Kirkland batteries as well as major brands work fine and have good life; cheaper brands may be the issue and I have found dramatically shorter life; (2) cleaning the contacts with alcohol when you change batteries helps (this time I found a long dog hair in the battery compartment, could this have been the issue?); and (3) setting the PRAM may solve the problem. So far so good having taken these steps.

Does it happen after you replace the batteries, does it happen when you change brands of batteries. All batteries are not the same length, they vary somewhat. for instance Duracell copper top measures 1.9870 inches, Duracell Quantum measures 1.9750 inches. A difference of 0.0120 inches. After "long" batteries have been in the mouse for a while the little spring holder takes a "set". I use a piece of aluminum foil on the flat end of the shorter battery. Works for me.

Mice disconnecting can have multiple reasons, the worst of which is interference. New examples appear regularly, the last I saw was with Wacom pens lying near the machine. A number of people contribute to these columns, some experienced and some less so, so the ideas put forward will vary.

But as this thread is two years old, not too many people will read it and take note of your views.

My magic mouse kept disconnecting. Drove me insane and over a priod of weeks it was getting worse and worse.

I tried everything. Changed batteries, tried a USB magic mouse recharger gizmo, reset everything, restarted my iMac countless times, I even reverted to an old USB mouse and trackpad for a while... then ... just before I threw it through the window in frustration ................ I moved my Modem about two feet (upwards). Lo and behold! Problem solved.

I hope this helps someone.
