Apple Remote Desktop update issue in Yosemite

I bought ARD in 2009, before the App Store. It has been updating itself, and in fact, I now have the current version (3.7.2). I just upgraded to Yosemite. All other apps appear to have been updated correctly, but App Store appears to be confused about ARD. It shows version 3.7.2 (the version I have) as an available update. If I try to update it, it fails with a generic error message, either “We could not complete your purchase. Remote Desktop is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update [sic] from the Apple menu to check for available updates.” OR “Update Unavailable with This Apple ID. This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.” However, I continue to see an update badge on the App Store, and I receive notifications that I need to update ARD. It's annoying.

I tried various Apple IDs and always got the same result (which is logical, since I didn't buy ARD from the App Store).

I suspect that my purchase of ARD has “aged out” of being supported by the App Store program, which now apparently assumes that all installations were purchased from the App Store. Is there some way to make this work correctly, short of completely uninstalling the version I have and buying the App again from the App Store?

+1 for me too, problems, can't get rid of update in app store, can't wake clients from sleep. Purchased Educational Boxed Version.

I will stay tuned for a resolution.

I am having this issue as well but I made the mistake of removing ARD and installing from the dmg package we have which installs fine, but on launch I now get "Remote Desktop is installing required software components. A newer version of this software already exists on this disk" if I hit continue it errors saying "The Remote Desktop Administrator software failed to start due to an unexpected error"

I downloaded 3.7.2 update package from the apple website but when I try to install it I get "Remote Desktop Admin Update can't be installed on this disk. A newer version of this package is already installed."

Stuck, any suggestions?

If you have an old mac running 10.9 or less install it on that until Apple release a fix.

If they don't fix it anytime soon switch to TeamViewer.

Hi, If you have another computer with ARD on it (in applications Folder) just Copy the Application and put it in the broken computers application folder.

If it does I can copy it from a 10.9 TM backup. Will try it tomorrow.

Reinstall ARD

I tried this but it does not work.

It still says there is something newer already on the disk. I even used appcleaner to rip out everything it could find but no luck.

mathewhellums' solution didn't work for me. Instead what I've done now as a temporary workaround, is to simply COMPRESS the Remote Desktop application into a zip file, and leave it there in /Applications. Then the App Store stops nagging me about an unnecessary update it won't let me accept. Now I unzip it when I need to use it, and I re-compress when I'm done. Thankfully the file is small and compressing/de-compressing goes quickly, and I don't need to use this application all that often. If I needed to use it multiple times a day, every day, I'd have to come up with a better solution. I'd either leave it be and do my best to ignore the App Store nags (yikes) or I'd bite the bullet and re-buy Remote Desktop from the Mac App Store for $80 (yikes x 10!) I shouldn't have to do any of this! Hopefully Apple fixes it properly soon, perhaps by linking us properly to the purchase in the App Store. As I recall, they did that for purchased disk installs of iLife at one point...

Good job Apple, the update to Version 3.7.2 is already installed under my corporate Apple ID. My personal Apple ID however is reading an update on my work machine. Apple IDs have a long, long way to go before they're functional.

I've managed to upgrade the ARD app on Yosemite.

In one line: Setup a VM with 10.9, install your old version of ARD and use softwareupdate to get the pkg to upgrade.
