I've upgraded to Yosemite. I knew that the beta's of Yosemite did't run Final Cut Pro (without work-around). I assumed this would be fixed
when Yosemite was released yesterday though i can't open Final Cut Pro without the workaround. Does updating FCP to 10.1.3 help? (i'm now on 10.1.1).

Yes. You should update to 10.1.3 if you are on OS 10,.10.

No version earlier than 10.1.3 will work on Yosemite without hacking the application bundle.
How do I update to version 10.1.3 if Final Cut Pro doesn't appear in my App Store purchases? I purchased/downloaded it early in 2012, but can't recall if it was through the App Store or not. It seems to be the only way of updating I can find elsewhere in the forums and online.

If you downloaded FCPX from other site than AppleStore then it is piracy. The only place you can purchase or upgrade FCPX is App Store.
take it easy... I bought it. I just couldn't remember if I got it before the App Store went into effect. But it isn't showing up in the Purchases tab in my App Store, so I'm not sure what to do. It says "buy" (not "update") for $299, and I don't want to get charged again for something I already bought.
App Store existed long before FCPX. If you can not see it in purcases then you have not bought it from App Store.
Perhaps a the time you purchased it, you had and used another Apple ID.

THe application has only ever been for sale through the App Store. Check hidden items in the Purchases page. You may have hidden it at some point. The Purchases page is a complete mess for trying to find anything.
I've checked for hidden apps, and there are none. Maybe the "buy" button should say "update" and it's some sort of bug... I've scheduled a support call with Apple for later this afternoon.

Not true. There are bugs and mistakes all the time with Apple products and apps. I'll let you guys know what happens after my call...
I have Final Cut Pro X 10.1.3 and Yosemite but the app won't load.
Do you get as far as the splash screen?
If you do. go to the home library (hold option key when you click on Go in the Finder menu), Applications Support/Final Cut Pro/ and drag the Layouts folder to the trash.

Still no go. Get spinning wheel. And on my dock two identical icons appear called "auvaltool". I have no idea what that is.
SSounds like a conflict with AU plugins.
