Cannot ShutDown OS X Yosemite

After installing Yosemite, now when I select either "shutdown" or "restart", nothing happens.

I can still have access to the apps at the dock, but not the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Starting an app will bring up the menu bar though.

Please advise.

If I do a hard reset by holding down the power button, subsequently when I start the laptop again, I will be forwarded to the OSX Yosemite installation screen again, where after a few minutes, my PC will start. But then I will be unable to properly shut down again.

Does anyone have this problem?

I am using mid 2014 13' Retina macbook pro and had experienced same problem.

but it was fixed by doing a disk repair in disk recovery mode.

First, open disk utility (you can find in spotlight). then I clicked verify disk and found that there are problems which cannot do a repair disk in normal mode.

Then, i open disk recovery mode (OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support), hold CMD R when you turn on your system.

Once in disk recovery mode, i clicked repair disk and it fixed the corrupted files.

then i restarted and everything is working fine now.

i tried a few times shutdown and restart and it has not been freeze again.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.

I had the same problem on my Mac Pro. My install was an upgrade. This is how I solved it:

Shut down the computer (you may have to just hold the power button until the computer shuts down)

Unplug the power cord (waited about 15-30 seconds)

Plug the power cord back

Turn on the computer

This resets the SMC (system management controller) on the Intel-based Mac.

Here's a link to an excellent article that explains how to reset the SMC on various models:

FYI, I just spent an hour with Apple Support, the tech was very good. He took me through a bunch of trouble shooting and my 09' MacPro is much happier now running Yosemite. Here's a few tips.

Try to launch Force Quit App, Cmd, Option, Esc to close Apps. Relaunch, Finder and Shut Down.

If that does not work, Force Shut Down by holding the power button till powers down.

Connect only keyboard/mouse, If you have lots of devices connected to your computer remove them, all of them, unplug external drives, unplug external raid drives, if possible use Mac keyboard/mouse.

Zap P-Ram; Restart computer and immediately hold down Option/Cmd/P & R keys, computer will boot and chime, keep holding keys till you hear computer restart and chime 3 times.

During my trouble shooting we discovered one of my USB ports on my 30" display was buggy, plugging directly into Computer Tower plus Zapping PRam seems to have solved my problem.

This basic trouble shooting helps to determine if devices/drivers conflict with Yosemite. If you have devices connected to your computer make sure their drivers play nice with Yosemite.
