I've tried replacing the icon file with another icon file in the contents, but it didn't work. I've also tried to paste it over in 'get info' while being the root user, but it it also didn't work! I like the design of the new iTunes icon, except the colour, red just doesn't do it for me!

I hate the new icon. The salmon-pink colour is atrocious. I made this one instead. You can go into the Applications folder, select iTunes, right-click and 'Get Info'. Then just drag your new image on top of the old icon that you see in the top left. You then have to authenticate. Done. You MIGHT need to find a way to convert .png to .icns format (I have an app for that), but it might work with just the PNG, which I've supplied below. The program I use is called iConvert Icons, which is available on the Mac App Store.

This fixed my problem too! I hate that garish red button; the color didn't go along with the other icons in the dock at all. What was Apple thinking?

ive changed the itunes icon and a bunch of others, my question is does osx automatically copy them somewhere else when u change icons.. i.e. will they dissapear if i delete them from my downloads folder and reboot?

I also sent feedback to Apple letting them know that it would be nice to have a feature where we can change the color, shape, of the App icon just as you can change the desktop in the OS version. But for now, this is easy and simple.

Downloaded your great .pgn (thank you!!), opened it in Preview.
Select All then Copy
Go to the Get Info window of iTunes.app in Applications folder
Highlight the red icon in upper left & hit Command V
Enter Admin Name + P/W
Done 🙂

But does the icon change in the dock when software is opened? My experience is that the icon in the Dock stays as original.
Dock icon changed to new one after restarting iTunes.
Just changed the ugly icons to more Yosemite friendly loks.
