Copy & Paste Artwork in 12.0.1

I'm adding a few new songs and iTunes 12.0.1 will no longer let me copy & paste artwork into the mp3 file. I have to save the file on my PC then add the image through a separate process. It slows down what used to be a simple process.

TT: Maybe you can help an old guy here. I am able to delete the artwork in iTunes 12 with the backspace in Windows, and enlarge artwork up to full screen with the Control key, but after I delete the artwork and want to take another image out of my library songs artwork, I try Control-C and nothing happens. I clicked both the large artwork area and the small one at the upper left that enables you to delete the image. Control key works for everything else, including enlarging artwork but the Copy/Paste procedure is a problem. Any ideas? Thank you.

Ctrl-C should work with a file in one of your own folders to place a reference to it in the system copy buffer. You then switch to iTunes, click in either the small artwork panel at the top left or in the centre of artwork tab and use Ctrl+V to paste. You can also drag and drop files. If copying an image from a web page right-click on it and click Copy Image.

Thanks TT. I'll try that. Actually, I basically use iTunes as a music library---no podcasts, radio, Cloud stuff...I grew up with vinyl in the 1950s, so there is only so much tech I can deal with. Thanks to you, I've found out how to delete artwork in iTunes 12 so that is the most important thing, especially when I download songs from other sources and their artwork is blurry. Normally, I get album artwork from the iTunes Store even if I get my music from other sources. Thanks again.

Yes, that's working for me too. The key is getting the blue "selected" border to appear around the artwork by dragging it slightly out of frame then dropping, at which point Ctrl-C (copy), Ctrl-V (paste), and BKSP (delete) work. Still no right-click menu though.

It is already annoying when Apple changes features that work fine without improving them. To do that and BREAK them is infuriating. I encountered this bug less than 3 minutes after upgrading. Maybe Apple should hire people who actually use iTunes to test it. Just saying...

I can't get add album artwork to work using any method. CMD+C/V, Drag & Drop, or selecting it from the navigation window. When I do any of these things it shows it in the info window, but when I click OK it doesn't seem to apply it.

That would suggest that the files in question are read only, or that your account lacks write permissions, or that the tracks in question don't support tags, e.g. .wav files.

Since this thread started several months ago, its worth noting that there's some improvement in artwork handling in 12.1.1.

  • drag-and-dropping an image file from Windows Explorer to the Artwork tab works as before, as does the Add Artwork function
  • there's no support for drag-and-drop from an image in a web browser to the Artwork tab (not something I've ever used, so I can't recall whether this was actually supported in past releases, and if so at what point it disappeared)
  • in addition to selecting the thumbnail image in the top left of the Artwork tab and pressing Delete or Backspace, you can now right-click on the large image and select Delete Artwork
  • one oddity is that when you first select the Artwork tab it may be necessary to click on the thumbnail image twice to select it (selection is indicated by a blue outline)
  • when the Artwork tab is visible, Ctrl-V will paste in any image that's in the Windows clipboard - AFAIR 12.0.1 required you to select the thumbnail area before this would work
  • Ctrl-C sometimes works to copy an image from the Artwork tab to the Windows clipboard - I've not delved into this but there seems to be some variation depending on OS (Win 7 vs. Win 8) and the iTunes version (32- vs. 64-bit).
  • The right-click > Copy and right-click > Paste options that were standard up to iTunes 11 have still not returned ... their omission from three releases (12.0.1, 12.1.0, 12.1.1) suggests that this (bizarrely) be intentional on Apple's part
