Yosemite Upgrade - iMac mid-2011 - Stuck on white progress bar screen at about 50%

I have a mid 2011 iMac. I started the upgrade to Yosemite about 4 hours ago. For the last 3 and 1/2 hours it's been "stuck" at the white progress bar screen at about 50%. I hear the harddrive occasionally do reading/writing, but it isn't doing a lot just a tiny bit. I've seen others post across the net with similar situations, but no solutions. I'm willing to wait, but would love to know if it's actually proceeding or simply in some infinite loop.

Anyone know how to tell if it's in a loop or proceeding?

Anyone have any ideas on things to try?

I really don't want to try and interrupt the upgrade, but it doesn't appear it's going to complete.

Ideas?

After 36 hours of awaiting this worked for me.

Stress doesn't help finding things the restart portion meant going to the top main menu click in the Apple then taking restart.

I kept thinking restart the install, off of the menu shown.

Thank you for this great help Apple should have done this.

The above happened to me too. My Macpro froze when upgarding to Yosemite.

Followed the instructions above and all worked fine .

Was a little worried when after pressing Cmd R it didnt seem to do anything but released after 3 minutes and got the reinstall screen.

then disabled wi fi and ran the yosemite upgarde again from the startup disc.

Rebooted in less than 10 minutes.

This procedure worked for me as well. Apple owes SATopWater some sort of payment in my opinion for helping god knows how many Apple customers out of this fiasco when Apple itself seems clueless.
