"Messages is updating..." FOREVER!

Just updated to Yosemite.

I've got a Jabber account with quite a few messages in it, and now the Messages app is saying:

Messages is updating...

The Messages database is being upgraded, please wait while it finishes or Quit Messages and relaunch it later.

This has gone on for several hours, and the progress bar has not moved whatsoever.

I tried hopping into ~/Library/Messages and deleting all the database files.

I tried hopping into ~/Library/Preferences and deleting all the Messages and iChat and IM .plists.

I've basically trashed everything about iChat or Messages in the Library, and yet every time I open Messages, it immediately comes up with that error message.

Any ideas?

Apple Gothic is installed and validates for me.

I've also tried a number of different variations of these:

rm -rf /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/IMCore.framework

rm -rf /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MessagesHelperKit.framework

rm -rf /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MessagesKit.framework

rm -rf /Users/hernanc/Library/Messages

rm -rf /Users/hernanc/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat

rm -rf /Users/hernanc/Library/Caches/com.apple.iChat

rm -rf /Users/hernanc/Library/Caches/com.apple.imfoundation.IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent

Yeah I might have gone crazy shooting down everything that resembled iChat or Messenger...
None of them worked BUT, if I create a new user and load Messages with it, it loads up just fine!! So it has to be something in my home folder that's messed up. I've made sure I have the right permissions, fixed permissions using the Disk Helper... I'm completely clueless.

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

rm -rf /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/IMCore.framework

rm -rf /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MessagesHelperKit.framework

rm -rf /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MessagesKit.framework

Without these the app will not run.

Removing the IMCore one also removes the IMAgent app which is used for FaceTime as well.

The App will not work in a text Mac User account account either now.

Your only option is to Reinstall the OS (which will give you back those needed items).

There are only two fixes I have seen to the "updating" problem.

One is checking the Font. The other is renaming the Attachments folder.

Ok one solution that worked for me is as follow. However I still cannot access my old messages on fresh new install Yosemite even if I copied them from previous system.

Using Terminal or iTerm and need sqlite3 installed.

1.Enter ~/Library/Messages

2. You will see chat.db file and two additional files -sh and -wal. You have to merge them. How?

sqlite3 chat.db - you enter sqlite3 interactive command mode

enter command VACUUM;

type ".exit"

data will merge and you should be able to run Messages.

Hi,

This thread is over two year old.

Start you own thread please.

You can refer to this one by copying and pasting the URL for it.

Other than that can't tell what you have done, or in what order to get to the point you are at.

In ~/Library/Messages is normally an Attachments folder.

Occasionally it seems that gets corrupted so it looks like a File icon instead.

It is this that should be re-named if that is the case and then a new Attachments folder should be recreated and then an Alias of that put in ~/Library/containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages
