I also selected the option the use FileVault when installing Yosemite

But I did not receive any recovery key. Am I not supposed to received a recovery that I can keep safely in case I forgot my password ?

Thanks

Yes, you should have been given the recovery key during the beginning of the setup. The following faqs shows the start of the process and describes when the recovery key should be displayed. The only option it gives to "change" your key is to turn FileVault off and then on again -- that is described nearer the end of the page.

HI FoxFifth!

I visited the genius bar bc off the sound my hdd was making after the filevault setup. they said that hard drives make sounds and that it is normal. I also heard the same sound when I picked up my mac.. I dont trust the genius bar bc I dont think its normal. The hdd is making soft scraping sizzling noises. I have heard the same thing before.. Do you have any idea of what it could be?

It is hard to say whether what you are hearing is normal without hearing it myself, but hard drives do make noise when they are reading or writing data and it is especially noticeable when they are doing large amounts of data. Encrypting a drive involves reading and rewriting the entire drive so if you were ever going to hear the drive that would definitely be the time, but you would also be able to hear it to a lesser extent when copying large files, etc. It is a mechanical device and does make noise when reading/writing data. The only thing I can think of for you to do if you are still concerned would be to take it back and get another opinion from someone else there or take it to another authorized service provider. I think the genius bar is generally trustworthy but they can be wrong.

Thank you so much! The genius bar was too noisy so no one could hear the sound. I tried to record it with my iphone but you can barely hear it bc of the others noises the camera picks up. I think I notice the sound more now bc I focus on it haha. I think I will leave it for a week or so and then I will take it back again to the genius bar. Your answers have been extremely helpful.

There are fairly simple ways to get to the data on your MacBook hard drive even when you have a user password and the other person does not know the password. With FileVault turned on there is no way to get to the data without knowing the password.

Regarding your MacBook becoming unusable, I would suspect that was because FileVault was in the process of encrypting the drive. Once that has been completed the difference is usually not noticeable. I have an Air with an SSD but there are similar reports for the Pro. http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/10/filevault-2-benchmarks-disk-encryption-faster-mac -os-x-lion/

Hello there, I had the same problem at Charesa and found your suggestions most helpful and also agree that the FireVault would be a great security precaution.

My question is would turning it back on, reverse the login set up which at present is set to log in automatically as myself.

Secondly, a Mac rep log onto my computer once as a guest user to fix something. I'd like to delete his profile from my user list but can't seem to do so the usual way, where one would simple click the minus sign to delete. In my case, that option is greyed out.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated.
