I didnt know what filevault is and I just turned it on without knowing what it is doing. It says that it is encrypting something and its going to take 1 day???? its using a lot of power and my hdd is making anoyying crackling noises. Its not loud.. I can not turn it off.. What can I do.??

Disk Utility is standard so you may just not be finding it. The easiest way is via Spotlight Search -- Command Spacebar or magnifying glass icon near right end of menu bar -- and type in disk utility. Other way is Launchpad and then look in Other.
I have a thread on this elsewhere that faded away ... but when you select FileVault when installing Yosemite, no security key is displayed (this happened to me and to other folks too). Not sure if this is a bug or not -- I'm happy with FileVault installed and don't foresee losing my password, but it does make me feel a bit uneasy.
I had the same problem, that is reason one why I unstalled it. I went to the apple genius bar and they told me that I didn't needed a Recocery code. That seemed a little odd to me so I just turned it off!
I'm currently having the same issue, but the encryption says estimating time remaining and moves from being 4/5 done to fully done that's back down again. Has going into disk utilities safely resolved the problem fo you?

this would only be true if the laptop was shutdown, and even then, I would not say that AES-256 can never ever be broken.
IF your laptop was found sleeping or any form of "on", it still stands a chance of being broken into.

Hello, I tried to find it, but there isn't option file -> turn off encrypt.
I don't know when it was turned on, but I really need to turn it off - the time remaining to the end of encryption is longer than lifetime of the macbook - it's really crazy.
what was that terminal comand to stop filevault encrypting?
What if I turned FileVault on months ago, (maybe even over a year), and it says it has 104 (or any other random number) of days remaining? I have a 128 GB SSD. What could be taking so long? It shows in my power usage as an App Using Significant Energy.
