SMS in Yosemite messages not working. "Not registered with iMessage"

Just updated today to Yosemite. Macbook Pro 2013 (current retail model) with upgraded RAM and flash storage. iPhone 6 running 8.0.2 with recent back up to iCloud.

When sending iMessages to my normal iMessage contacts, everything is ok. This update should also allow for continuity with SMS, that they show up as Messages in the same application. I cannot get any messages which are not iMessages to send out. Each time I attempt this, I get the error "User is not registered with iMessage." Which, yes, duh. That's the point. I've sent and received SMS messages on my phone with out error, but still have not been able to initiate or respond on my Mac with Messages. My contact card only has the same phone number which is registered to the same iCloud account for both the phone and the Mac.

I've restarted the phone and logged in and out of iMessage in hopes of a refresh. I'm out of ideas as to how to get them to sync up, or whatever it is they need to do.

Is there a step that I am missing? It should, in theory, just work, but I can't find any messages on this. Any guesses?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10), iOS 8.0.2 iPhone 6

Hello,

I'm having same issues, and more, with my MacBook Pro and my iPhone 6, both running current updates (yosemite and IOS8).

when i try to create a message/text from my macbook, sometimes it finds the 'name' of the person in my contacts, sometimes not. for example i'm looking for 'mary f*****n' nothing comes up. BUT if i create same message from my iPhone (same contacts), her name comes up. if i then send a message from my phone (whether she's an iPhone user or not), the message appears via continuity onto my macbook iMessage-- but NOT showing her name, just her number!

as well, when creating same kind of message from macbook, i get the 'red' and an error message that the person is either 'not a registered iMessage' user, or just 'can't send message'.

i've done all the steps i've found here, no change. it's time to call support i guess?

thanks

Hi,

If the "names" are missing double check both the System Preferences > iCloud or Internet Accounts and the iPhone Settings for Contacts to check the same method is being used on both.

Obviously Apple would prefer the iCloud and Enable the Contacts app in System Preferences and the similar setting on the iPhone.

You can of course sync the Contacts via other accounts such as Yahoo or Google.

In the Contacts app go to the Preferences > Accounts and check only one method is in operation.

I would sort out the Sync of the Contacts app(s) first but it does sound like you are looking at needing to contact Support.

hi,

thanks; did all that, then called Apple. it was one of those things where i knew as much as the support person 😉

at any rate, HE seems to think it's bc i don't have 'handoff' capabilities on my MacBook (bc it's an older macbook), even though i'm running the latest version of Yosemite.

I'm not sure i buy that answer, merely bc i previously had no issue with iMessage on my Macbook, or my contacts, etc. not really sure what to do next.

thanks though 😉

Hi,

My mid 2011 iMac cannot do Handoff.

This is separate from the Contacts app on both devices being able to Sync properly (the cause of missing names).

My two devices can also do Text Forwarding which links the two devices when they are on the same network.

It does not need the Blue Tooth enabled stuff for Handoff.

Apart from that we know of several issues that mean the Mac does not login to the iMessages servers properly.

One has an Error Messages saying contact Support.

the next appears to be logged in but then turns All contacts Red and says they are not Registered with iMessages.

Another just returns the "Not Delivered" error message under the "sent" text.

Quite often you need to get to a Level 2 rep at Support.

IT can take a while to persuade them to look at your Mac's Login with the iMessages server.

The issue can look like a Software or hardware issue when in fact it is an Apple ID issue. (Free to fix)

It is late where I am and it will be a while before I am back.

i own 2 Macbooks and an iMac 37 lucky i didnt update the iMac

Yosemite is a total mess and doesnt work well at all, and has a lot of features i dont like. I am going to format the HD and reinstall Mac OSX mavericks.

o actually tried to reply to some other user posts here but couldnt as the forum said they were banned from posting, which is due to the fact that anything that apple doesnt like results in the forum user being banned from posting, despite the fact that "Apple doesnt read these forums' (first forum on planet without a moderator! - that still somehow has someone who bans users and thinks users are stupid)

Hi,

Apple does supply Moderators but calls them Hosts.

They very reply to any thread directly.

There were some "Community Specialists" (although I haven't seen one post for a while.

They are supposed to pick up on older unanswered posts - In some Communities that is after they drop of the "first page". In others it is after 24 hours.

There are Terms of Use that make it very clear what can and cannot be posted about.

Very old Threads do get Archived.

Once Archived no-one can reply or add to the Thread. The Thread is still readable - whether it has good advice or not.

Some posts (and sometime a section or the whole Thread) will sometimes get moved to a forum that is out of sight of the main group of users if the the Post breaks some of the items in section 2 of the Terms of Use.

AS you are going to Reinstall there is no point in providing further answers.
