I know these aren't great solutions but have youtried http://airmailapp.com/ or http://sparrowmailapp.com/ ?
I am by no means a geek, but did you try Johns3112 fix? It worked for me and I left the port 587; he had to change his port. Changing port to 25 also worked for some. Do you need to check SSL...I didn't.
Thanks. I can use my Claranet email account with its web portal, so I can still email with this account via my browser. But that's massively inconvenient vs accessing it via Mail on my my Mac.
I tried all the suggested port settings and unchecking SSL, none of it worked.
Just as an aside...this happened with Lion and were 15,000 posts and Apple did nothing.
This worked for me from another poster.
Quit mail
Open up Finder
In the Finder menu bar select Go > Go to folder
type in ~/Library and click Go (on my kb the "~" is next to the left shift key)
Open the folder Mail
Open the folder V2
Open the folder MailData
Double click to open Accounts.plist (should open in TextEdit)
Find the block of data that contains the offending mail account
Find the line within this block that says <key>UserAllowsInsecureAuthentication</key>
Change the line below this from <false/> to <true/>
Quit TextEdit
Restart mail
Thanks, I too tried this, but like everything else it didn’t work. Apple Support managed to get my business Sent mail working, but the folders are still a mess and it’s still not working as it should.

I've tried all of the suggestions in this discussion and NOTHING has worked. I think I'm going to have to switch to another mail app. 😢
Like you, I am going to start investigating alternatives to Apple Mail. This is really terrible - to know that it is such a common problem and for Apple not to have a fix.
I'm another person that had a fully functioning email application that no longer works in Yosemite. I've tried different ports, changed settings, etc. and I have yet to find a solution that lasted more than an hour.
Have two other Macs running Maverick. One on Yosemite. I feel like I'm back running OSX 10.0 or 10.1. Beta ware that Apple claimed to be finished software. Having run Apple computers since 6.5 (I had a Break for 8 bumper sticker), this is the most disappointing software Apple has ever offered.
Has anyone tried the latest update yet? I am lucky and have everything running OK except my calendar and contracts sync so I am reluctant to risk installing the updates.
I did update Yosemite and then changed the port back to their original settings. I can now send emails.
Something that worked for me was to remove the current smtp account, close Mail, open Mail again and finally create again the smtp account.
I checked the box "Detect and remain the settings of the account" (by default it takes the port 465 and checked "SSL" in my case), and the authenticy was established by password.
SSame problem here. Been like this since 10.10. Hoped for a solution with 10.10.1. Was surprised that nothing was done.
ANd and there is a lot of other terrible problems with the Mail app.
There seems to be no moral responsibility to either avoid the problem, or notify the customer that it is terminal .
