I have the same issue. iTunes worked perfectly fine playing HD movies from my iMac until I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10 and iTunes 12. Now it won't even play standard definition movies or tv shows with the same error.
I think last time this happened (in 2011), it was fixed with a patch

Same problem here, just upgraded to Yosemite and iTunes 12. No videos would play including all the standard definition ones. I am only using the builtin display of my early 2011 MBP and iTunes is complaining my display does not support HDCP. Hope a patch comes soon.
same problem here.
Same problem Apple just wiped out my entire library of itunes purchased movies. This is insane.
I have the same problem but if I use iTunes 11 on windows 7 via parallels virtual machine then I have the joy of watching a purchased itunes movie on an apple computer. One day we wont have to rely on windows anymore, come on apple... I thought you guys were with us on this. Maybe I will just go down to the video store.
I have exactly the same problem after upgrading to Yosemite and iTunes 12. I can't play ANY of my bought TV shows or movies!
Please help!

Ok, I finally fixed this by disabling all screen sharing apps - I disabled TeamViewer, and then the videos finally played again when I disabled Chrome Remote Desktop. You need to ensure all external display drivers and screen sharing apps are disabled.
Can you explain how you did that?
Is there a way of finding which apps might be sharing video content? I can't think of any app doing this on my Mac.
In OSX, open System Preferences, on main menu, right at bottom, see which apps there may potentially be screen sharing, such as Chrome Remote Desktop, and disable or delete it.
I have screen sharing disabled, and still unable to access my TV shows. My music plays...
I can't think of any screen sharing app on my Imac.. I deleted teamviewer, I still can play any movie.
Does someone try to go back to Itunes 11 ?
Had the same problem. Ran across a post where someone said they had a display link usb driver installed from long ago. I searched and I had it, deleted it. Problem solved.
Same problem here. The problem was originally I had an old non-Yosemite compliant verision on my system when I did the upgrade so when I searched, it was never found to uninstall. I installed the beta version that was Yosemite compliant and it still did not work.
When I saw this post, I search for Display Link on my system and it now appeared with the option to uninstall. I did that, my system rebooted and VOILA I can play my movies now and my home sharing for Apple TV (a different problem that seemed to be related but unproven) has been corrected.
If you have an old version of Display Link on your system, install a new version then Uninstall and your problems should disappear.
Thanks. This fixed it for me.
