I have the same issue. iTunes worked perfectly fine playing HD movies from my iMac until I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10 and iTunes 12. Now it won't even play standard definition movies or tv shows with the same error.

I think last time this happened (in 2011), it was fixed with a patch

I had the same problem. After I installed Yosemite, iTunes would not play any of my iTunes movies or TV shows, giving the message "This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)."

I first thought the problem was with iTunes, but I could watch my TV shows and movies in iTunes on my Windows volume in Bootcamp.

I first tried to restore the system only by going back to Maverick but it did not work, beware! Do not do that if you haven't any back up with Time Machine.

Finally I used Time Machine and restore the whole Mac volume with a version back a week ago before I installed Yosemite. I got Maverick back and iTunes (12) is playing all my bought movies and TV shows.

I spent most of the weekend on the phone with Apple (thank you, Apple!). I have a MacBook Pro, circa 2012. When I upgraded to Yosemite, iTunes 12 still played my music but simply refused to play any movies or TV shows. I didn't get any message. Just no play. I did an internet recovery back to 10.8, and iTunes works fine. I did an upgrade to Yosemite, and iTunes behaved as before: no video. So I'm going back to 10.8 to stay for awhile. I have been reading the threads about screen sharing, and I deleted everything I didn't need, and made sure that screen sharing was off, and in my case that didn't help. And let me say that I am glad that I invested in an external drive, and use Time Machine regularly.

I have the same problem as described here. iTunes won't play at all on my mini and my Sharp TV. It is definitely HDCP compliant, but I just keep getting the same error as described here. I see the solution is to perhaps uninstall a "Display Link" driver but I can't find any such thing (any more suggestions welcome).

Come on, Apple. You're really testing us here. Something as simple as playing legitimately purchased movies on a TV and you stick this idiotic DRM garbage in our way. Fix this. It is insane. How does this get through even the most basic testing?

Hello,

I had the same problem, still do with OS X10.9.5, iTunes 12.0.1. Finder>Applications>Right Click on iTunes>Check the 32-bit mode option>Close/Force Quit iTunes entirely, and re-open. This should resolve the HDCP issue.

If this does not work, or if iTunes does not allow 32-bit mode, and throws a pop-up stating 64-bit mode alone allowed, we can try one more work-around:

-Login as a new guest user (Apple symbol at top left corner>System Preferences>Users & Groups>Unlock, enter system password>Click on "+" to add a new user>Create any test user, test password

-On completion, Restart/Power toggle the entire system

-Once system boots up, when prompted for username/password, enter the newly created guest credentials

-On bring up, open iTunes12, enter Apple login credentials and check for error

-If we still get the HDCP error(most likely we will), try the steps mentioned in the first line (i.e. Finder>Applications>Right Click on iTunes>Check the 32-bit mode option>Close/Force Quit iTunes entirely, and re-open.)

Logic behind this is, likely that in the admin account we have some third party application which is preventing the iTunes TV Shows from displaying the video. Display Link is one such software. Now in my case, i do not have any Display Link on my system, and still observe this issue. So quite possibly there are many such software where we stumble onto this iTunes TV Shows bug.

Side-Note: My system has more issues apart from the HDCP one too, not sure if there is a causal link: With my admin account, purchased movies play perfectly, but the iTunes TV Shows plays audio for 3 seconds before blanking out. Reauthorizing device, reinstalling iTunes, nothing helped. Apple tech support has gathered logs for this admin account where i still have iTunes TV Shows blank-screen issue. Once they get back with a solution will share with all.

I have been ****** about this problem. For me (FINALLY) I found an answer via random Google search. If you are running Yosemite on older hardware, and trying to play the media on the laptop monitor, with no other device connected, try uninstalling Display Link. The article I read said uninstall and reinstall the latest version, but I did not even install and the fix worked. I can play my purchased media with no problem. Hope this helps and agree with previous posters. It is really stupid **** that Apple has not addressed this issue - it is annoying to users and it creates a customer who will just start buying from another vendor. Good luck!
