  1. You must have a fully bootable Mavericks system from which to boot the computer. You can then erase the volume with Yosemite, then clone the Mavericks system to the empty volume you just erased.
  2. You can erase the drive and reinstall Mavericks if you have a USB Mavericks installer flash drive.
  3. You can boot the computer via Internet Recovery and reinstall the original version of OS X that came with the computer. This is only feasible on models from 2011 to the present.

I installed Yosemite & found out several of my apps didn't work (Fusion, etc.) so I wen't back to the original OS (Mtn Lion). But the first thing I noticed is the horrible GUI - they wen't from the nicest, most beautiful & polished interface on any of our LiNUX, Microsoft, Android & Apple computers, and they took me back to totally flat (Windows 3.1 circa 1992???)

I booted the Macbook Air with the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys pressed & wen't thru the steps similar to whats described above (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718). I formatted my OS partition (NOT the whole hard drive), then let the installer download Mountain Lion from the internet & installed it locally. The whole process from Yosemite to Mountain Lion took about 5 hours (it's a few gigs down over home cable modem in Alaska).

The Microsoft upgrades let you CHOOSE to use the previous GUI style if you prefer it. I'd love the look/feel of Mavericks inside Yosemite. Can I download a theme/skin to accomplish that?

I'm having major problems since the update. Late 2009 iMac . After install folders like >applications and >downloads never load, can't minimize windows, Doc is not showing at all. They just show a spinning wheel and empty contents. on the phone with apple support for 3 hours today and ended with a 48 hour call back. any ideas? Tried a fresh install of Yosemite twice, repaired disc permissions, check disc, restarted holding shift, created a new admin profile and still experiencing same issues...I'm lost.

So, although it sounds like a bit of a faff, the best solution for me will be to backgrade the new Macbook Air to Mavericks

Unfortunately, Macs cannot boot from any OS older than what they came with. So, if yours comes with Yosemite preinstalled, that is what you will need to get used to. However, if there is still stock left over which has Mavericks installed, go for it - ask when you are buying it.

You have a lot of issues here, the main being you appear to be infected with the iWorm Backdoor/Trojan/Botnet, almost certainly from installing pirated software from PirateBay or possibly another BitTorrent site. See Dr. Web announces new “iWorm” malware. It's not clear whether you must erase your hard drive or not. Removing the above file and the /Library/Application Support/JavaW/ folder will almost certainly disable the botnet, but depending on when you were infected, there may be additional files installed with unknown purposes.

Watch all your financial accounts and change all critical passwords, especially if you use the same one for many sites.

How can I uninstall OS X Yosemite and return to OS X Mavericks?
