Is there a way to listen live to voicemail as it is being recorded as a way to screen phone calls? Sort of the way answering machines work on a landline service.

Thanks for your reply. I guess what you're saying is that the voicemail is forwarded to my phone by the carrier after the caller has completed his/her message. That makes sense. Too bad. That was a nice feature of the answering machine.

True, but the caller is not connecting to your phone like an answering machine. Once you do not answer the call, the call is being handled by the carrier and their server. Your phone is out of the mix by this time. The voicemail is recorded, then notification is forwarded to your device. That is why if you are rather slow at answering a call and it goes to voicemail, you cannot answer, it is disconnected from your device.
No, it's a voicemail.
Or you can ask your phone carrier as voicemail is a carrier feature.
