An error occurred while moving messages to mailbox “(null)”.

When I delete a message, I get the following error: "An error occurred while moving messages to mailbox “(null)”." What's more, the message does delete, but it doesn't end up in the trash, or anywhere for that matter - it's lost forever. Anybody know a fix?

I've set up Mail on my Mac (OS X) iPad and iPhone. No problems with my Gmail account. And no problems with iOS.

Last time I set up an IMAP account, say mail.npsonder.com I had this problem with my Archive folder. Also in Mail (on Mac) all folders were found under Inbox instead of the normal way in the left panel under e.g. Npsonder.

To resolve the problem I 'just' had to enter the right names of the IMAP account instead of the generic mail.npsonder.com that worked properly for most actions. The actual name was like mail14.ispname.com, and everything works right now.

I know this is an aged thread, but today I encountered the same issue, and I wanted to share the new fix for this bug. What works for me is opening Mail/Preferences/Accounts, and at the bottom in the "Trash" section, deselect "Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox". Immediately beneath that, the "Store deleted messages on the server" will become greyed out, but still selected. My deleted emails now go to the server.

as of El Capitan version 10.11.6...

An error occurred while moving messages to mailbox “(null)”.
