No sound to internal of external speakers after downloading Yosemite. Anyone else have this issue?
Ran into the same installation bug with my 2009 iMac. No sound, and when I could get the Sound pref pane to open, no input or outputs were there. Did a power reset and zapped the PRAM, no joy. Did as I always do with new Apple OS installers, created a bootable USB drive, and attempted to re-install it all again. Same result.
What finally worked, and I wish I'd have followed this basic step before I had to resort to these re-installations, was detaching everything from my iMac. USB and Firewire drives (the latter performing my TimeMachine back ups), booting from the USB Yosemite drive and installing once more to the iMac's internal hard drive. Upon restart…sound. Finally. Checking my Sound pref pane, all inputs and outputs restored!
Whew! The only issue left has to do with the Microsoft Wireless keyboard (6000 v3) using Bluetooth. Both its volume up and volume down keys only decrease sound volume. I can live with that, if need be. Hope this helps.
Resetting the PRAM and afterward going to System Preferences and Sound and selecting my Bose speakers worked for me. Thanks.
that worked for me, until machine went to Sleep, then back again, let us know if it comes back
go to terminal and type
sudo killall coreaudiod
go to terminal and type
sudo killall coreaudiod
I have the same problem, if I unplug my speakers and plug back in they work, until the computer goes to sleep and awakens again.
My problem is almost this as well. Eventually System Preference will recognize the headphones, but if I unplug the headphones and re-plug, the System Preference does not recognize the headphones for no reason
Exact same problem on mid 2010 macbook pro (7.1), can hear sound at boot up and in iTunes etc. But, volume control not working and it is greyed out.
Reset the pram didn't work.
Repair permissions didn't work.
sudo killall coreaudiod in terminal works until next reboot.
Hurry up apple, read and fix!
Same/similar issue...
I saw something, it's that the sound in headphones doesn't work if the sound was already put on mute before to plug it. And also, if i disable the mute before plug out the headphones the sound into speaker works pretty well.
If it's could help

I no longer have an apple key on my laptop. Which key did the keyboard designers replace it with?
After the recent 10.10.1 update:
Still not sound, so tried the following...
In terminal: <sudo killall coreaudiod> restored the sound temporarily, after a reboot, no sound
Run: <sudo killall coreaudiod> again and then repaired the permissions, reboot, still faulty.
Reset the PRAM, still the same.
Run: <sudo killall coreaudiod> again, then shut down.
Started in Safe Mode, no sound.
Rebooted, sound has been restored ever since - hope things continue...
In another thread about sound issues, I saw a fix, which worked for me:
plug in headphones, unplug, and then you should be able to select your external speakers.
I have ancient & beloved HK Sound sticks +iSub, using USB, and go through the same sound problem
with every incarnation of Mac OS X. The sound issues have been sorted, in the past by revision 1 or 2.
Don't loose hope!
Rumor has it that first revision comes out today with 10.10.1.
Good Luck!
