my speakers work, but BT headphones don't any more
GGo into your system preference. Mine changed upon restart, and redirected to another found device.
that's not it
but now that I opened that dialog, all I get is a spinning beach ball, which never goes away, and I can't close the dialog
System Prefs not responding, closed it, restarted
After reboot, opening Sys Prefs/ Sound and selecting anything results in endlessly spinning beach ball
System Preference -> Sound shows option for headphones and my 23" HP high Def monitor? Something is not right...
That's just it....I go to Preferences -> sound and there is no option to choose except the head phones and my monitor. No Itunes from internal or external speakers! No option to choose any device. Speaker Icon on control line is grayed out. Could that point to something not set right?
I've had a series of issues since upgrading, I believe it is BT related:
If I do NOT try to use my previously functioning BT headphones I get:
If I try to connect to the headphones I have issues with all of the above bullets. Trackpad and keyboard continue to work after the above problems manifest themselves.
This bug is repeatable - don't connect to the BT headphones, things are "good"
Disk Utility found no issues
RePairing the headphones does not help
I reset the PRAM, and that seems to have fixed it
I have the same issue I have a ticket with support had me do an SMC and PRAM reset it did not address the issue
That doesn't sound (pun intended) promising, but at least they know there is a issue with the sound. Bummer because I use iTunes 3-4 hours a day!
How do you reset PRAM?
restart, immediately hold option-apple-p-r
continue holding for TWO restart chimes, then let go
I installed Yosemite today on my Mac Pro tower from 2009. I had many problems getting the software to work and did finally with Apple's help. However, my sound doesn't work and in system preferences I can't get the computer to see the Bose speakers or the Logitech mike and camera. I have tried everything mentioned here in this forum. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Does anyone know if this sound issue is one that is a general problem with Yosemite?
Well, to answer your question I think this has to be a general problem with Yosemite. It does not recognize my Creative Gigaworks T40 speakers! I am new to the Apple community. So, not sure how to proceed. It's not like you can just get an Apple tech on the phone and have him/her walk you trough this issue.
I'm really disappointed with Apple. Brings back bad memories of Microsoft, which is why I switched to Apple in the 1st place...

I reset the PRAM last night, and the problem went away completely, everything worked. Put the machine in Sleep, went to bed, woke up, problem was back.
The BT menu thinks the headphones still Connected, they are NOT in the Sound Prefs (were when working), At this point the Sound Prefs won't close, and all I get again is the beach ball that spins endlessly (30 minutes).
I don't know if this is a BT issue, a Sound Prefs issue, or what, but again this morning I am broken.
I just plugged in the head phones went to System Preferences -> sound - highlighted earphones, and guess what? I have music! However, System Preferences -> sound still does not recognize my Creative Labs external speakers. Is someone at Apple looking into this??? Trying to get through to a tech is nearly impossible!!!
