I installed Yosemite on my iMac and 2008 MBP with no issues, after installing it on my mid 2012 MBP everything seems fine but I cannot open my Desktop and Screen Saver Preference pane. I get the following error (see screenshot) Any and all help is appreciated. All of the other prefs seem to work fine.

I have the same problem but also with the Display preferences as well.
I'm also have preference pane errors (more than one) since installing Yosemite. I can't remember all the pops up I've had now but the last one that came up a while ago is regarding the Notifications.
I have the exact same problem! Whenever I try to open the desktop preference (or system preference even) it keeps quitting on its own. Also, my navigation bar at the top is no longer visible (the ones with date / time / name etc at the top). Tried restarting for a couple of times and still ain't working. 😟
I have same problem. Tried deleting "com.apple.preferencepanes.cache" & "com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache" with no effect and ran "Repair Disk Permissions" in "Disk Utility" again with no success. Curiously the problem is only on one of the two users set up on my iMac.
I fixed the issue but it was a pain. I had to reinstall from my cloned backup to the previos OS then install Yosemite again. Everything is fine now. There has to be an easier way though.
I agree there must be an easier fix. Apple any help here?
I am having this problem as well. I tried moving those two .plist files to the trash: no effect. I tried moving desktoppicture.db to the trash: no effect. Does anyone have any ideas? I've been working on this since 1:30 pm CT, and I'm not making any progress.

It's baaaack! I cannot open Desktop and Screen Saver from System Preferences. I chatted with Apple Support, and the tech was able to fix it by moving some files from Macintosh HD ▸ Users ▸ marcpetersen ▸ Library to the trash. Everything worked fine for about one day; then the problem came back. When I click on Desktop and Screen Saver, I get this:
For folks having this problem, it would help if you supplied some log entries (if any) that occur when you attempt to open these system preferences. To do this, first quit all applications and then open the Console utility. Then click the option to clear the console's display. Finally, attempt to open the Desktop & Screen Saver system preferences and see if any log entries show up when you get the error message. For these entries select them and press Command-C to copy, followed by posting them in a reply here. These might indicate the source of the problem, which may be a faulty set of desktop images, or a damaged or incompatible third-party screen saver.
This is the log entry that occurred when I attempted to open the Desktop and Screen Saver preferences:

You have two different adware programs installed and are running out of RAM. First click the "[Remove]" links to download AdwareMedic to remove your adware. Hopefully that will clear up the problem. If not, start a new thread about which applications you are running that are causing you to run out of RAM.
I used AdwareMedic to remove the adware identified by EtreCheck. I restarted my machine, but I am still getting the same error. Here's the EtreCheck post-removal of the adware:
