OS X Yosemite - Kernel panic

I am using Macbook Pro - Retina(2012).

Today, I have tried to upgrade Mac OS to OS X Yosemite. After finishing download and it started installation.

Somehow, Computer shut downed automatically.

I have tried to boot after pushing the power button.

The Macbook displays these several times and gone.

Your computer restarted because of ~~

and then

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffffff....)

It is not booting any more and still have same messages.

My head is going to panic.

Can anyone help me to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Identical issue here. I started Yosemite upgrade, my Mac Pro restarted but now kernel panics repeatedly on boot. Disk and disk permission repairs haven't fixed it. I can't even boot it into safe mode without this same kernel panic! Was running fine until I attempted the upgrade!

panic(cpu 2 caller 0x...): "Process 1 exec of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 2"@...

Debugger called: <panic>

Duplicate post from another thread but the issues are consistent. Newest 15" rMBP (stock, 6 weeks old) and the Yosemite upgrade bricks the machine. If I can get the install routine to run at all it does a loop of kernel panics and restarts multiple times then ending with the prohibitory symbol. Doesn't matter when I've tried to upgrade from Mavericks or if I do a clean install from a USB drive or even the internet recovery. The one time it installed to the SSD it appeared to be fine but upon first reboot it went straight back to the prohibitory symbol.

The ONLY way it'll run Yosemite is straight from a USB 3.0 flash drive or SD card instead of the SSD. Apple Store has verified this twice now and on both occasions told me to just restore from my Mavericks time machine backup and sit tight. Based on the numerous reports of this same issue with other MBPs I'd say Apple didn't QA the firmware or drivers or something very well. Genius Bar folks told me they're getting these reports in a lot.

OS X 10.10.1 update! Hopefully this solves the problem, even though there does not seem to be any specific mention of the kernel panic issue in the lost below.

About the update

This worked great for me:

I rebooted in recovery mode and fixed permissions and repaired the disk.

I then reset the PRAM as below (taken from online).

Here's how to reset your PRAM:

  1. Shut down your machine. Yes, all the way down, not sleep or logging out.
  2. Press the power button and then press command-option-p-r. ...
  3. Hold those keys down until your Mac reboots again and you here the startup chime.
  4. Let go of the keys and let your Mac reboot normally.

My September 2011 15" MacBook Pro was returned in October 2014 under AppleCare because of video issues. The logic board was replaced and the video

problems were no more. However, less than two weeks ago it was again returned to an Apple Authorised Repairer under the Apple Repair Programme which only applies to 15" and 17" built in 2011.

The UK company who Apple use ran tests and said they couldn't find any problems and it was returned to me. Since then, it shuts down and restarts at least 3 times per day with the dreaded 'kernel panic' screen.

Under the Apple Repair Programme, Apple said it would replace logic boards on 2011 MBP's with any of the following problems, copied from their website :

Apple has determined that a small percentage of MacBook Pro systems may exhibit distorted video, no video, or unexpected system restarts. These MacBook Pro systems were sold between February 2011 and December 2013.

Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will repair affected MacBook Pro systems, free of charge. See below for details on affected models and service options.

Symptoms

An affected MacBook Pro may display one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
  • No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on
  • Computer restarts unexpectedly

Products affected

  • 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models manufactured in 2011
  • 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina models manufactured from Mid 2012 to Early 2013

I have been in touch with the UK Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) and explained that my MBP is constantly shutting down & restarting spontaneously with the 'kernel panic' screen. In the symptoms above, Apple admit that affected Macs may display one or more of the symptoms. Mine falls into the category :

• Computer restarts unexpectedly, but the AASP refuse to change my logic board despite admitting that the new logic board fitted in 2014 under Applecare

could still have a fault as the logic board they fitted was in stock, so possibly faulty.

Does anyone know where I should go from here, or suggest what needs to be done to correct this troublesome fault which only seemed to appear whenI upgraded from 10.9.5 to 10.10.3.

Thanks in advance. I have 2 back-ups for my 15" MBP, but not with Time Machine; I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone back-ups.

Have tested my Mac with TechTool Pro 8 which shows no hardware/software problems and Disk Warrior, but neither show any corrupt files. Help !!!

I also have this problem but on my 2008 Mac Pro. After installing Yosemite and upon restarting I get an error stating "...restarted due to a problem." And then the mac reboots once or twice showing that same error. And when I try to put my mac to sleep it just restarts and gives me the error again.

The report begins with:

*** Panic Report ***

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff800d01e80a):...

It appears my kernel panic upon boot was because of my pc Nvidia GTX650 Video Card (never had this problem in prior versions of OS X with this card). I replaced the card with the old, original ATI card and it seems to be running normally now on startup, restart and sleep. I'm considering attempting to use the Nvidia Yosemite driver just as a test.

Unfortunately my kernel panic is completely unrelated to your MacBook Pro kernel problems but my mac was exhibiting the same behavior which led me here.

Hi! Same error here. I upgraded from mavericks to Yosemite. At first, the system run smoothly. The day after DURING WORK parallels crashed completely. It was not possible to shut parallels down. after this crash, my mouse cursor went crazy. It was too fast to control. Really, never seen this before. Then it tried to restart my MacBook pro (9.1). Nothing happened. Tried it a few times, nothing. So I had to do a cold restart by pushing the on/off button. It started, then I had the same screen like in the post above. After several tries, the restore console opened. But I had to install yosemite again, a repair didn't work out. 1 day later I received a email from parallels advising to install an update. Aha well, done that. Parallels runs but windows had be be repaired. Are you all using parallels? Maybe that's the problem...

Same problem here. I have 2012 mid retina mbp. I get constant kernel panics. I close my lid, couple of minutes later I go to reopen it and there's the error. "your system has restarted because of an error". This didn't happen until I updated to yosemite. I have an appointment with the apple store on Friday. I've tried everything so far (pram, reinstall yosemite, start up in safe mode, and erase HD and do a clean install. Nothing has helped. The problem is still there. Who is in charge of software at apple. Some serious issues going on lately from bricking of iphones, kernel panics look like they are caused by yosemite itself, and apple pay is double charging some customers. Pretty lame... I miss you STEVE!

Hi Folks,

Same problem here...

My situation:

Mac OS X 10.9.5

MacBook Pro (2.2 GhHz Intel Core i7)

Downloaded upgrade and after first restart the same error message, first line of error:

panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff800dbce524): "Process 1 exec of /sbin/launchd failed, errno2"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2422.115.4/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c:3836

...

Please note: the only thing that jumps to mind is the fact that i changed my HDD to a SSD oh and I use the native apple disk encryption.

Hope there's an answer out there 🙂

Grtz,

Raymon
