Spotlight in Yosemite will not search web

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro. I live in the United States.

Spotlight simply will not search the web or show Bing search results. All the boxes in spotlight preferences are checked.

When I uncheck everything except Bing result, Spotlight still will not search web or show bing result.

Advice?

Was working for from the beginning and then stopped working. I don't believe I changed anything... but don't we all say that.

Fixed it by enabling Location Services:

1. System Preferences> Security & Privacy > Location Services

2. Be sure to Check 'Enable Location Services' which "Allow the apps below to determine your location."

Note: You will only be able to make changes if you Click the Lock in the bottom-left. Requires Admin Password.

3. Select [Details...] button next to the App listed as 'System Services'

4. Confirm that 'Spotlight Suggestions' is Checked.

Again, this was working for me when I first installed Yosemite, but noticed it stopped working yesterday.

Hope this helps others!

I'm in Brazil and my Spotlight Suggestions wasn't working... I tried everything you wrote here, but nothing worked. I searched a little more and found out that this feature is only working with few countries... 😢 So if you really want this feature working my suggestion is you turn off your location tracking information and try to deceive your Mac OS X.

There is a link at Apple that shows which countries this feature is available:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan (No Maps)
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Spain
  • Switzerland
  • UK
  • USA

Correct and realistic.

But we should really highlight cases like this 'cause they witness two negative trends: (a) more and more "highly advertised" features that simply don't work and (b) more and more narrow-minded approach from a company that suppose to have an open-minded approach to topics. When maufacturers will realise that people today is mobile, really mobile? One year here, next year there? Those things should just work everywhere.

I agree with you, just tried once, it doesn't work, back to Alfred and I'll keep my expectations short next time I get "great things" in the next update.

It's a pity, though.

There are two issue:

1) In Mavericks, you could search "When was George Washington born?" in Spotlight and one of the results would be Web Searches. When you clicked on Web Searches result, it would open your default browser and show the search results.

See, for example, here: Use Spotlight in OS X Mavericks to find files and more

Does Yosemite Spotlight do this?

2) If not, do you get any web results?

Previously, I didn't. But when I selected English (US) as my default language (I live in the US), I get Bing Search "ebay.com" when I search for "ebay."

So, on the one hand, they've enhanced Spotlight because when I click on ebay.com in Bing Search, it gets me directly to the site, whereas with Mavericks Spotlight searching "ebay" would just show me search results in Chrome for "ebay."

On the other hand, they've removed the Maverick's web-search functionality. To search for "When was George Washington born?", I have to open a browser to do it.
