Computer Name With Number

I was a beta tester of Yosemite and recently updated to retail. This happened while I was a beta tester and I thought it would go away, but it hasn't. My computer name is being followed by a (#) that continues to increase for no reason (e.g. (1), (2), (3), etc.) - any ideas?

Mac mini (Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I have to agree. I've tried all kinds of things now, nothing sticks longer than a few hours for me. Yesterday I went from 6 to 2 to 3 and then to 4. And I just checked my machine and now it's 5. When I hit the sack it was 4.

Apple just has to fix this, most of the "fixes" I'm seeing in these forums are just band-aids that last for a little while. Looking forward to 10.10.1.

Go to Settings > Energy Saver > and uncheck "Wake for Wifi network access"

Then Settings > Sharing > and change your computer name. Also check the name in the box provided when you hit "edit".

Finally, reboot your computer one more time. You should find that your computer's name doesn't change any longer.

Note: I've read that this may disable some functionality of "Find my Mac" but I haven't been able to confirm it.

Could be, I did have "wake for network access on". I've set it off (and stopped the iMac from sleeping), will see if this helps.

So far, like many others it seems, nothing I've tried seems to fix the problem permanently. It comes back every day or two for unknown reasons. Yesterday however it didn't happen at all, I have no idea why (maybe because I didn't use VPN, but then I don't use it that often anyway so going a day without it isn't very unusual and must have happened previous times when the problem has recurred). It does seem to have stopped happening on my MBP though...

I have not personally tried "Back to my Mac". I have tried finding my Mac through the "Find My iPhone" utility in iCloud and IOS 8.1.

The first attempt, after turning "wake for network access" off, took a very long time. In fact I had given up on it and decided it wasn't working.

It eventually did. Leaving this setting off, I tried it again today, using two different devices, and it worked both times.

I tried using Find My Phone on both my iPad and my iPhone and they found my iMac without any issues. I don't use Back to My Mac, but I cannot see how switching off "Wake for Network Access" would have any effect on that either (assuming you also stop the Mac from going to sleep in the first place of course, if it goes to sleep then nothing requiring network access will work.)

So far I haven't had a recurrence of the computer name issue since switching off "Wake for Network Access", but as it doesn't happen every day anyway I can't be sure it's fixed it just yet.

I too have this issue ( x ) and have had it through a number of incarnations of OSX. I don't see this as a Yosemite issue. A google search will bring up threads back previous to Mountain Lion and probably earlier.

What I find interesting is the 'relative' scarcity of this issue, meaning yeah, there are a few google results, but it just isn't that wide spread. I can imagine Apple not knowing what to 'fix' when it isn't more common. My most recent name change is holding atm. It was xxx'-mbp and I removed the hyphen and dash and capitalized mbp (MBP) so now it's xxxMBP. All in all the name still tells me which computer it is when looking through router or other network settings

I think all I did was actually change the name, no other settings changes or rebooting of anything.
