I was a beta tester of Yosemite and recently updated to retail. This happened while I was a beta tester and I thought it would go away, but it hasn't. My computer name is being followed by a (#) that continues to increase for no reason (e.g. (1), (2), (3), etc.) - any ideas?

Mac mini (Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I have been working with the apple engineers since there have been so many ways to try and stop this from occurring. I no longer have this problem since I removed the DropBox icon from the Finder menu. I did this because when going to a folder and selecting an item I wanted to move to my dropbox folder, I would receive "no options available. This isn't the case when in the dropbox folder! I also kept the 5ghz option as well as the guest network active. So you may want to give it a try and see if it works for you.

I've tried this several times but on each occasion, within seconds, the name reverts to the bracketed form, even if you click on the lock to prevent further changes.

I've noticed that in Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration there's a file called com.apple.smb.server.plist which reads:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<key>AllowGuestAccess</key>

<false/>

<key>DOSCodePage</key>

<string>437</string>

<key>EnabledServices</key>

<array>

<string>print</string>

<string>disk</string>

</array>

<key>LocalKerberosRealm</key>

<string>LKDC:SHA1.4C603C429CD6BBCA9B2EAE81EF806E002E8940D4</string>

<key>NetBIOSName</key>

<string>IMAC-958F8F</string>

<key>ServerDescription</key>

<string>****** ******** iMac (3)</string>

</dict>

</plist>

The asterisks are mine. I have tried to delete the brackets but the file is protected. Is this the cause or merely another symptom?

I have exactly the same problem except that my MBP has never been affected. I have tried all the solutions suggested so far but none has worked.

What is bizarre is that the iMac is creating virtual clones of itself which it is then treating as separate entities and listing in the Shared window. It's almost narcissistic. At the same time it will no longer recognise and connect to any of the other machines on my network (MBP, iPad and phone). My main problem is that I can no longer print from my MBP, on which I do most of my work, unless I unplug it, carry it upstairs and connect it directly to the printer. I can't even use file sharing to print from the MBP using the iMac because I can no longer access the former.

I have sent in a bug report to Apple (it seems I am not alone) but haven't even received an acknowledgement. Is there anyone at the other end, or are all messages sent to the trash?

OK so I got a bit fed up with this issue, I was also going around in circles until the fix (I have waited over 2 weeks to test before posting this) came to me.

Open System Preferences > Network

In the network section you will most likely see "Automatic" listed as your Location. Click on your current location then click "Edit Locations". Create a new location (I called mine Home but I do not think the name matters) then select it. The old location can now be removed. Apply the changes then sigh with relief. It would seem that the location that you were using when upgrading to Yosemite somehow got corrupted.

I hope that this is a fix that also is workable for you.

This worked for me, perhaps because I had also just installed OS X 10.10.1. I still have a couple of ghost aliases of the old name lurking in "shared" but they seem inoffensive. At least my iMac now appears under "devices" and I can now connect to my MBP, although this happened earlier when I

removed Dropbox from the Finder sidebar.

I didn't want to jinx myself yesterday, but the 10.10.1 update seems to have fixed this problem for me also. I have slept my MBP overnight and upon wake the name is actually still the same.

I'll definitely report back here if it starts again, but this is the longest the my machine name has stayed the same since I installed Yosemite 10.10.

Thanks All...
