nsurlsessiond - taking up all bandwidth!! Help ?

Ever since updating to OSX yosemite, the process "nsurlsessiond" has been taking up my whole bandwidth for the past 2 days...downloaded almost 5GB of data so far!!

I read on some forums that it could be due to icoulddrive, but my icloud is OFF and it literally has nothing in it...

Please help! How do i stop it ?

I thought I'd add my experience here as it may at least provide weight to this issue.

I Upgraded to Sky's Fibre broadband 6 weeks ago and immediately my broadband crashed to 4mbs instead of the guaranteed 36.1mbs.

I've had 6 engineers out to check cabling etc and eventually it's been passed up to Sky's Network Operations Centre. After more testing (the usual, one laptop plugged in by Ethernet only) and having rebuilt my entire network I've discovered that the issue is the nsurlsessiond problem highlighted here.

For your information - and wait for this - in 2 months I have downloaded 5TB of data - yes 5TB! Even though my iCloud account is 200gig of which I've used 20!

I've just signed out of iCloud on my Mac and rebooted to see if that has any affect on the problem.

I feel like a Pratt because I've been blaming Sky!

...and no doubt it's true but turning off iCloud didn't stop the phantom feed for me, because so many other services use nsurlsessiond functionality. I experimented with Little Snitch and so much was trying to use it I finally just blocked it completely, wondering what I'd break. In my case, with iCloud turned off, the obvious thing that broke was Software Update, which was using that channel to download whatever app announced it had an update to send me. So a lot of that data was being cached for quick update. Turning off nsurlsessiond produced a message in the iTunes window, Software Update pane, that it can't connect to iTunes. This means that you would not get update notices, but at first blush it seems to have stopped the phantom feed for me.

I agree with everyone here, this is not what I want from Apple. In my case, I choose to use a relatively slow DSL feed to shave some monthly business costs and this constant drain of bandwith would have made life worse for me.

(PS, the notion that Apple advisors don't know this is happening is difficult for me to believe. Are they worried about class-action suits?)

@Rkls I was running on El Capitan, so things "may be" a little different. But stopping nsurlsessiond didn't stop Software update and iTunes for me. So I was able to debug the problem down to basically iCloud, and Specifically iCloud Drive.

I guess everyone was reading the much shorter answer from GJS0,in the previous post above his I have provide steps how I arrive at my conclusion.

Use Fseventer to see your HDD's file writing within the session. ( Use it by unticking low level fsevent in the fseventer preference if you are on Yosimite or El Captian )

You should be able to see what are the files that is being constantly writing into your HDD. Then you should be able to guess what is the application that is causing problem.

this was my exact problem, I was going crazy, my entire bandwidth was overtaken, I could´t even open google for 3 straight days, using my home network... so after deleting the whatsapp backups from iCloud it all went back to normal.

Was facing the same issue... I am on a 3G-plan and all available bandwidth is being used by that process... Running this script did help for me nnow

launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.nsurlstoraged.plist

launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.nsurlsessiond.plist

sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.nsurlsessiond.plist

sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.nsurlstoraged.plist

but this can hardly be a permanent solution...

I am not crying victory yet but this seems to have done the trick. Have stopped Whatsapp backup and for the last 30 minutes nsurl has done have 25 kB up and 6 kB down. If it keeps on working you are my new hero, ksec.

I spent some time tonight writing a quick and dirty tool which will automatically disable the nsurl* services which are causing this problem for a lot of people. As I mentioned in a previous post (Re: nsurlsessiond - taking up all bandwidth!! Help ?), I have personally rectified my issue whereby WhatsApp backups were causing the huge amount of data every few days though several other people still continue to have the issue.

Please remember that disabling these services might cause adverse side-effects for other applications which depend on them.

You can install my tool by running the following command at a terminal then rebooting:

/usr/bin/curl -sL "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/GavinJS/nsurl_killer/master/install.sh" | sudo /bin/sh --

After searching for months, this finally solved the issue for me. The problem was stupid iCloud drive backup function. Just delete whatsapp data from iCloud drive and you are good to go.

so my issue is pretty new i see and just realized this started just after Yosemite 10.10.3 came in with the new Photos app

I had enabled icloud Photo library and can see its trying to upload 20,000 photos/videos my old iphoto library is 66GB so that explains the bandwidth issues.

so best thing i can say is check any apple apps that might be syncing to not just iCloud Drive but the photo/music library too.

Using little snitch I simply made a rule that blocks _nsurlsessiond from attempting to connect to any server. Seemed to work for me thus far, however I'm sure that at some point in the future, I will encounter a problem that has to do the fact that the connection is blocked.

We have been dealing with this parasitic data usage for months and it has cost me $$$ to keep buying more data from the provider whom I blamed for the problem. Just yesterday we discovered the “nsurlsessiond” in Activity Monitor was at 8 Gb I googled the process name and found this information on Apple Support, I am not the only one with this problem. There is a lot of information here and some interesting work arounds from some very savy people the best advice I found was to call Apple Support. I spent an hour on the phone with a senior support person he had not heard of the problem he shared my machine and looked through everything and found no problems with my setup. 2008 iMac, Yosemite 10.10, using a dedicated cell phone from the provider with 10 Gb/month plan. We have limited options for internet connection at home.

Everyone that is on Yosemite 10.10 and above is affected by the parasitic problem most don’t care or know about it because they have large data plans.

Those of us with 10 Gb a month are affected the most watching bandwidth disappear. There was only 1 other person that had taken the time to start a case according to Apple Support.... THIS IS AN APPLE YOSEMITE PROBLEM. CALL THEM START A CASE THE MORE PEOPLE THAT DO THE SOONER A PERMANENT FIX WILL HAPPEN. Until then I am disconnecting my equipment after every internet session.

I had the same problem my download Data went through the roof in two days, however the problem is fixed now.

Firstly I went to the activity monitor to find out which programs were sucking up all this Data.

I then purchased a program called little snitch fix the problem completely

. These programmes that were downloading gigabytes of Data have now been isolated by using this program.

I hope this helps, I know how frustrating it is

This worked for me:

1. Blocked access in my router to swcdn.apple.com

2. Restarted the computer

3. Checked network in Activity monitor. The previous massive data download (500Mb in 10 minutes) is no longer an issue. nsurlsessiond has downloaded only 120Kb in 15 minutes.

I do not know if this is the "right" solution. So far no other functions have been affected.

The new Photos was uploading at 600KB/sec (surprised it didn't max out my connection though). Pausing it definitely stopped the upload.

First shut off Bing searches and the suggestions in spotlight, then you gotta go to activity monitor and Force Quit the nsurlsessiond from the network tab🙂
