nsurlsessiond - taking up all bandwidth!! Help ?

Ever since updating to OSX yosemite, the process "nsurlsessiond" has been taking up my whole bandwidth for the past 2 days...downloaded almost 5GB of data so far!!

I read on some forums that it could be due to icoulddrive, but my icloud is OFF and it literally has nothing in it...

Please help! How do i stop it ?

Below is a sample of the process :

We have been dealing with this parasitic data usage for months and it has cost me $$$ to keep buying more data from the provider whom I blamed for the problem. Just yesterday we discovered the “nsurlsessiond” in Activity Monitor was at 8 Gb I googled the process name and found this information on Apple Support, I am not the only one with this problem. There is a lot of information here and some interesting work arounds from some very savy people the best advice I found was to call Apple Support. I spent an hour on the phone with a senior support person he had not heard of the problem he shared my machine and looked through everything and found no problems with my setup. 2008 iMac, Yosemite 10.10, using a dedicated cell phone from the provider with 10 Gb/month plan. We have limited options for internet connection at home.

Everyone that is on Yosemite 10.10 and above is affected by the parasitic problem most don’t care or know about it because they have large data plans.

Those of us with 10 Gb a month are affected the most watching bandwidth disappear. There was only 1 other person that had taken the time to start a case according to Apple Support.... THIS IS AN APPLE YOSEMITE PROBLEM. CALL THEM START A CASE THE MORE PEOPLE THAT DO THE SOONER A PERMANENT FIX WILL HAPPEN. Until then I am disconnecting my equipment after every internet session.

Hi all - having the same issue and have reported it to Apple as a major concern and been issued a case number.

Also on Yosemite - (10.10.2 was waiting to download new update at the end of my plan month with the remaining data - of which I have none now thanks to this issue).

FYI - I do use iCloud but only for syncing calendar, contacts, reminders, safari, and notes; nothing that requires massive data (like the 500MB downloaded by the 'nsurlsessiond' process just an hour or so ago... and the other hundreds of MB on previous days recently until I got little snitch in order to monitor this problem).

I do not use iCloud for photos, iCloudDrive storage or music (I have just double checked all these settings to make sure.

Another process that was downloading in the background (83MB in one hit yesterday) was 'ocspd' - apparently linked to keychain certificate checking, but again I fail to see how such a process could require sooo much data. I've turned off the keychain prefs that make this happen so its not doing it anymore, but I'm pretty unhappy about having to this as it is part of the security of the system apparently (although the terms 'security' and 'privacy' are starting to take on a spurious relationship here).

Anyway - just adding my experience of this problem to the list. Its unacceptable, regardless of ones download quota! But especially so for those of us with limited download allowance (I have a 12GB/month plan - its the best I can get where I am - and its shared between 2 people).

And disconnecting after every session helps - but does not eliminate the problem. Today the 503MB download happened while I was checking my email (had only just plugged in the cable to do so... and then checked little snitch before disconnecting and got the 'surprise!).

Will we get a fix for this? (I hope so!), and if so - will Apple buy me some quota in order to download it? (I expect not!)

As carl_afton says above - the more people that report it formally the better.

I found a excellent page here https://themacwrangler.wordpress.com/2015/01/05/yosemite-and-ocspd-crl-security- revocation/ in case you are interested. This guy did his homework. It is important for everyone to remember if you start taking things into your own hands, support staff's can't help you.. and that is fair.. its part of the game.. For example I have disabled ocspd about 4 months ago, my browers just complain they can not get a certificate for the site, that means there is no guarantee from the browser is actually the real site. And this opens up possible trojan-sites (sites that appear to be what you think they are but are not).. so be warned if you go this route.. One final point, . why is a certificate daemon have web-Cacheing functionality the daemon is downloading mega-bytes of stuff.. strange.. These two functionalities do not go together, but you will find (most likey more often now) odd groupings of different functionality, not seen before.., this is done to make it harder to disable, one or the other.. Because if you kill the daemon, you kill both certification support and caching .. (there is another cert daemon by the way ). Again part of the game.. Here are a few:

ssl.google-analytics.com - this is google's main analyitics collector

data.flurry.com

e.crashlytics.com -- those two are amazon's they are sorta bogus.. amazon is always kinda bogus..

fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net: type A, class IN --> a1168.dsw4.akamai.net: type A, class IN, addr 58.97.45.32

these are APPLE's CDN's.. content-delivery-networks.. they cache alot of the content, so when you are browsing a site, instead of boggin down the internet with millions of copies of the same static data, you can just get cache copies locally. Many times if you see some daemon that been running for hours that (but you just noticed it) its been a chattin with one of these servers.. but more likely its been chattin more then just cache data, for exmaple my apple weather widget..tracks me.. its true my weather-widget is reporting back to their headquarters where i go location wise. every day... funny - cute? .(.its been blocked). In general CDN's are a good thing, but for awhile now, its other stuff they are also doing.. analyitics/ads/tracking... these servers perfectly placed in the network, for example Certificates.. when you request a cert, how easy would it be to just pass that data onto a tracking data-base.... and then call it caching! Honestly I dont know what they are doing,I do know CERT's dont need gigabytes of data, and they don't run for hours..

There is no secret to any of the host names etc, its all out there for you to discover, the secret is what they are actually doing with all your data, I think companies need to start a'fessin up.. come clean like the government did.... remember that secret about what the naughty NSA's had been up too?.... ahh the good old days..

Posted this a while ago ........ it provides a temporary solution.........

Over the last few months we have experiences massive unexplained data usage on our 15gb wireless data plan. We have discovered and resolved the problem. (An Australian guy with screen name "Bananaporcupine" came up with this solution on Apple Support Communities.)

The problem for us was that we use Macs. In their recent OS upgrade Apple has introduced a new application called

"nsurlsessiond" that ***** about 5-600mb per day!! For people on normal ADSL plans this extra 15-20gb per month in data isn't a problem - for those of us on limited wireless plans its a catastrophy as it kills our quota well before month end and we are paying through the nose for data already.

Anyway if you are using Mac's and you are experiencing infruriating and regular loss of large amounts of data - following are two options to resolve the problem:

1. Use Little snitch, it monitors all network connections and and can be used to deny nsurlseesiond when it pops up. Full version cost around $40

2. Open the terminal from your launchpad (is basically a system command tool)

Copy and Paste the following into the terminal:

#!/bin/sh

launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.nsurlstoraged.plist

launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.nsurlsessiond.plist

sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.nsurlsessiond.plist

sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.nsurlstoraged.plist

It will then ask for your password, type it in and it blocks nsurlsessiond

This only lasts until the computer shuts down So you have to do this every time you start the computer back up.

Telstra could you please use your clout and lobby Apple to resolve this problem.

Hi there guys,

I have just used some very simple advice from earlier in this thread but i have unwittingly been the victim with this system bug and it has costs me nearly £200 in excess use charges from my broadband supplier, which i am sure i will never be able to get back. I am unfortunately It savvy enough to look at any coding but am about to contact Apple support with this issue. We live in a very rural UK location and speeds are 'challenging' to say the least, any other simple quick fixes greatly welcomed.

My iPhoto is stuck saying Uploading 2,261 Items.. 6 gig of uploads later .. Uploading 2,261 Items... Any ideas... Restart. close open... Uploading 2,261 Items errrrgh..

Its not moving... Usually shows progress bar and number of files to upload reduces.. After about 8 gig uploads, still doesn't budge..

Im running a 27" iMac retina.. Getting about 1mbps upload (Adsl)

Need ideas.. Anyone this happened too ?

May 28, 2015 6:17 PM in response to eyeris11

I'm pretty sure I have this problem too. About 10 days ago my iMac started downloading massive amounts of data, about 200GB in 3 days. This exceeded my monthly download quota and my ISP throttled my speeds. I was away traveling so my wife spoke to our ISP. They suggested turning off the iMac and kindly gave us another 300GB of data. We then had 5 days of normal internet usage. As soon as I turned the iMac back on data downloads started again. In 14hrs it downloaded about 60GB of data. I scheduled a call to Apple this morning and talked through the problem with them. They agreed it was most likely due to nsurlsessiond and confirmed that their engineers are aware of this problem. They said it is only happening on some computers and they're still trying to work out why. They had me download a capture utility that created some log files which they asked me to upload to them to look at. They asked me to turn off iCloud drive but this doesn't seem to have changed anything, I'm still downloading a lot of data, even with all programs closed.

My ISP shows downloads and upload data separately and it's definitely downloads that are the problem. The amount of data that I have downloaded since this started happening (over 300GB) is more than the free space on my hard drive (which isn't changing) and more than the size of my iCloud drive (200GB). The Apple rep confirmed that they are aware that this process is just downloading data but not saving it.

At present, their only solution is to keep this iMac disconnected from the network. I do have a MacBook Pro that I had with me while I was away. That has iCloud photos and iCloud drive set up on it too. I'll start that up shortly and see if it behaves the same. That will at least indicate if the problem is related to just my iMac or to my Apple ID (which is the same on both computers). This seems a pretty big problem!

Another data point for nsurlsessiond causing massive data usage. Mine started when I upgraded to Yosemite (10.10.2) from Lion. I am now running 10.10.3 but the issue remains. I am running Little Snitch but the "deny" for nsurlsessiond does not seem to work properly. I manually "allow" and "deny" web connections as they pop up so I can use Activity Monitor to see what is happening on the network. On my particular system I have determined that when I "allow" swcdn.apple.com to connect, nsurlsessiond launches soon thereafter and starts its massive downloading. If I "deny" swcdn.apple.com, nsurlsessiond does not launch and I have not seen the massive downloading. I am still researching what swcdn.apple.com is supposed to be doing.

Jun 17, 2015 4:20 PM in response to topograf

I am yet another person who would like to know what this data download is.

Much of the speculation here is not correct, despite some claiming successful outcomes; against the grain, I am using 10.10.2, and do not use and have never used iCloud for anything except Find My Mac — everything has always been turned off.

With every log-in, this large download commences. It would be easy enough to block it, but I want to know what it is.

Jun 21, 2015 9:56 AM in response to David Connell

This article is about iOS, but it explains nsurlsession. I get what it does, but I also have a gut feeling that the hundreds of MB that are downloaded every day is excessive (over 1.5 GB yesterday, over 500 MB today, a lot of which appears to be related to advertising), especially when it is designed to be out of my control (controllable when using command line or third-party tools).

https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/Foundation/Reference/NSURL Session_class/

If you use Little Snitch, open the network monitor, find nsurlsessiond in the list, and double-click on it. A detailed info window will open. cmd-2 will open the list of servers nsurlsessiond is accessing, which for me today is quite long and varied — this is much more than iCloud. If you don't see anything in the server list, it is probably so long, with long urls that don't have natural line breaks, that it breaks the list display.

In this second window, cmd-3 will display connection statistics, included when the connection has occurred, and how much data went up and down.

Jun 26, 2015 1:45 PM in response to David Connell

I am having the same issue, consuming 500MB every day from swcdn.apple.com. This is the apple update servers. Thanks to tips this thread, I have auto-download of updates turned off in my iPad and mac, and turned off spotlight suggestions and bing web searches, and disable iPhoto uploads to iCloud and never use iPhoto or iCloud.

Nothing stops it except little snitch, and it keeps retrying to download from 12 different IP address at apple every 15 seconds forever. I have opened a support ticket with apple since I too need my bandwidth back.

nsurlsessiond - taking up all bandwidth!! Help ?
