nsurlsessiond - taking up all bandwidth!! Help ?

I want to thanks everybody for their Input, I literally just bump up this thread from the dead and getting many useful response. Below are a few update.

It try Recovery from the System, and also creating a new user. It seems both attempt suggest as long as I log into my iCloud account, it will start downloading. So both solution dont work.

Thx to the suggestion of iCloud files failed to Sync, ( It will have a Cloud icon on your Finder, look up for a few post above ) I took a look and there WERE NOT any file with that icon. Both on All My files and on iCloud Drive. However I did notice 8 Strange file, a few of them are Infinity Blade 2 saves, which weight less then 100KB each. and a few are Kakotalk Log file which weight in few MB each. In total they weighted less then 10MB. And my top download speed are 900KB/s. That means I would have to redownload them like a millions times over and over......

I deleted them, and the downloading immediately stopped, I thought I have fixed it, but I am highly suspicious those are not the culprit due to the file size I mentioned above.

Today I saw nsurlsessiond downloading again, I wait for a few minutes and it stopped. Since I had taken lots of Picture I was giving it sometimes to sync. I opened Photos and turns out all picture were there already. So this is all good.

However after a few hours nsurlsessiond was downloading at full throttle again. At first it was downloading from Apple CDN ( actually it is CDN from Akamai), I think that is ok, anything from CDN are likely not something on your iCloud, but rather likely to be Software Update, Apple Music, Apps Update etc.

However I watched the Data went over 3GB and didn't slow down, again I had no idea what it was downloading. I updated the latest El Capitan when it came out as well as the Recover Image. So i should not have any more update.

And later in the hour, nsurlseesiond was, again downloading from Amazon AWS S3.

( Which I am pretty angry as a shareholder because Apple has so far still fail to make enough Datacenter and keep the storage on their bill, instead they continue to use third party storage like Amazon S3 and Microsoft Azure )

So basically, the problem is still not solved, and Apple has fail to acknowledge the problem. A quick search on Google and Twitter will see lots of angry users. And to those poor soul like me who got charged more because we are running on 3G/4G Internet connection with Monthly cap.

An update to the above. I since updated to 10.10.5 (was running 10.10.3 I believe). In Spotlight I've kept Suggestions and Bing Web Searches turned off, per advice here. Along with the System, most other updates are current, with a few pending such as Numbers. I have turned iCloud back on, but turned off everything except iCloud Drive itself in iCloud System Preferences (I've left all the apps checked in Options...).

I had left Little Snitch in Trial mode, and had only denied connections "Until Restart". I find that Network activity is now entirely acceptable, nsurlsessiond comes alive momentarily but is not churning constant MBs of data. I'm not denying any connections except a persistent Logitech upgrade push that is useless on my older iMac. I can't really account for how things normalized, except possibly that the system update resolved some buggy behavior. If so, it means Yosemite wasn't really done until El Capitan was nearly released. Which further suggests that Apple had real problems enabling the full suite of Safari, iCloud and AppStore (Update) online background behaviors across the whole ecosystem.

I appreciate this thread. Thanks for all that have contributed. I could not get iCloud Drive working on Yosemite even with 2 hours of an engineers help, and I'm a former ACN even, so I blew the account away and created a new one. Then I too had this issue. At first, when I saw that it was suggested the problem was WhatsApp, I immediately thought that would be crazy. Well, it WAS WhatsApp. Who would have guessed? Worse, I had 2 iPhones both feeding into iCloud. Anyway, all is now resolved. Thank you.

nsurlsessiond seems to be running all the time and using my limited download. My temporary (I hope) but frustrating solution is turn turn off my modem when I don't actually need the internet. Apple, please fix it.

Turning off all of the options in Spotlight Preferences has no impact on my machine - it continues to download 2.5 MB/sec even after the machine has sat idle for hours.

I've submitted this issue to Apple using the Feedback Assistant.

You could try this http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/112329/limit-my-upload-speed-at-os-leve l to limit the upload bandwith. It worked for me and now I'm uploading a photo library with 15.000 photos without affecting the other internet connections at home.

I could not agree more with this discussion. I've had apple products for decades.. I will continue to do so, but for the first time, I've enabled PF (yosemite's rather convoluted but effective firewall), and I also enable root on all my apple products. Why? Shutting down all of local daemons FROM YOSEMITE. I'm not so worried about external attacks, I'm tired of Apple's multitude of hidden and newly introduced network daemons eating my BW. Don't get me wrong, some are useful, but most are not, and hardly any are documented.. another "we just accept what Apple thinks is best" approach.. Even when I have found them, they are hard to disable via the normal route root // LaunchCtl, but Launchctl has been completely re-written, so half the time the new commands don't work, but rest assured its always possible by other means.

It's a slippery slope both apple and google are now blindly sliding down. As revenues start to tighten up, after years of massive profits, its obvious where they will be heading to keep revenues flowing.. us, the user-base with all our data.... I've spent the last two weeks disabling / blocking all of the network daemons Apple has introduced in Yosemite, two weeks before that I spent disabling all the Ads and tracking google has introduced on their mobile devices... Yet today i found another daemon NSURLSessionD happily blasing away..I did not choose nor will I ever take advice given here to "stop for a day" as if I should accept this intrusion .. I have taken a different more direct approach ..

Finally, if apple (1) told us what they were doing and properly documented how things work instead of being sescretive (2) made netwok daemons act responsibility, assuming NOT everyone lives in the USA with unlimited BW ( I live in Thailand where bandwitdh still matters) maybe I would not be so aggressive and annoyed. However that is not the case, therefore I have been forced to take matters into my own hands. One last point I started at Cisco Systems as a developer in ip routing, back when Apple was still debugging AppleTalk. My attitude has been and always will be, computers and computer manafucturers, OEM's Vendors, Ad agencies and the their respective marketing departments DO NOT decide, unilaterally what information to send from my computer, I decide, . The last thing I want is an arms race in terms of sending out data without my permission, but I won't sit idle like some helpless victim.. it Apple continues on this path so will I (as will many others). Ultimately Apple can make it impossible, and we can stop buying their products, however I sincerely hope it does not come to that.

In closing just have a look at all the daemons in LaunchAgents (users based) and LaunchDaemons (system based) available to run.Again I am not saying every single one of these use network asserts, but alot do, alot are not documented, and now alot of been disabled thank you very much.i

Hi all - having the same issue and have reported it to Apple as a major concern and been issued a case number.

Also on Yosemite - (10.10.2 was waiting to download new update at the end of my plan month with the remaining data - of which I have none now thanks to this issue).

FYI - I do use iCloud but only for syncing calendar, contacts, reminders, safari, and notes; nothing that requires massive data (like the 500MB downloaded by the 'nsurlsessiond' process just an hour or so ago... and the other hundreds of MB on previous days recently until I got little snitch in order to monitor this problem).

I do not use iCloud for photos, iCloudDrive storage or music (I have just double checked all these settings to make sure.

Another process that was downloading in the background (83MB in one hit yesterday) was 'ocspd' - apparently linked to keychain certificate checking, but again I fail to see how such a process could require sooo much data. I've turned off the keychain prefs that make this happen so its not doing it anymore, but I'm pretty unhappy about having to this as it is part of the security of the system apparently (although the terms 'security' and 'privacy' are starting to take on a spurious relationship here).

Anyway - just adding my experience of this problem to the list. Its unacceptable, regardless of ones download quota! But especially so for those of us with limited download allowance (I have a 12GB/month plan - its the best I can get where I am - and its shared between 2 people).

And disconnecting after every session helps - but does not eliminate the problem. Today the 503MB download happened while I was checking my email (had only just plugged in the cable to do so... and then checked little snitch before disconnecting and got the 'surprise!).

Will we get a fix for this? (I hope so!), and if so - will Apple buy me some quota in order to download it? (I expect not!)

It is important for everyone to remember if you start taking things into your own hands, support staff's can't help you.. and that is fair.. its part of the game.. For example I have disabled ocspd about 4 months ago, my browers just complain they can not get a certificate for the site, that means there is no guarantee from the browser is actually the real site. And this opens up possible trojan-sites (sites that appear to be what you think they are but are not).. so be warned if you go this route.. One final point, . why is a certificate daemon have web-Cacheing functionality the daemon is downloading mega-bytes of stuff.. strange.. These two functionalities do not go together, but you will find (most likey more often now) odd groupings of different functionality,not seen before.., this is done to make it harder to disable, one or the other.. Because if you kill the daemon, you kill both certification support and caching .. (there is another cert daemon by the way ). Again part of the game.. Here are a few:

these are APPLE's CDN's.. content-delivery-networks.. they cache alot of the content, so when you are browsing a site, instead of boggin down the internet with millions of copies of the same static data, you can just get cache copies locally.Many times if you see some daemon that been running for hours that (but you just noticed it) its been a chattin with one of these servers.. but more likely its been chattin more then just cache data, for exmaple my apple weather widget..tracks me.. its true my weather-widget is reporting back to their headquarters where i go location wise. every day... funny - cute? .(.its been blocked). In general CDN's are a good thing, but for awhile now, its other stuff they are also doing.. analyitics/ads/tracking... these servers perfectly placed in the network, for example Certificates.. when you request a cert, how easy would it be to just pass that data onto a tracking data-base.... and then call it caching! Honestly I dont know what they are doing,I do know CERT's dont need gigabytes of data, and they don't run for hours..

There is no secret to any of the host names etc, its all out there for you to discover, the secret is what they are actually doing with all your data, I think companies need to start a'fessin up.. come clean like the government did.... remember that secret about what the naughty NSA's had been up too?.... ahh the good old days..

I did report to Whatsapp team, as a matter of fact I asked about the iCloud backup last year and didnt get any feedback. I was hoping they could clarify if there are any DOUBLE backup if both iCloud Backup ( iPhone Backup ) and iCloud Drive Backup ( Whatsapp Back up into iCloud Drive ) were turn on, they couldn't care less.

And I found out myself it does, and if you have 3GB Whatsapp history it will take up 6GB of your iCloud space.

There are lots of advantage of doing Whatsapp backup via iCloud Drive rather then using iPhone default iCloud Backup.

For iPhone iCloud Backup, iOS will compress every App's setting and Data into a number of files, and then tries to upload this to iCloud. This means if you have 5GB of Apps Data, it will likely take 3 - 4GB space to create these files. On a 16GB iPhone, you will always run out of space and therefore you will never be able to backup your iPhone even if you have like 20GB iCloud Storage space.

Compared this to Whatsapp's iCloud Drive backup, i believe Whatsapp backup itself to iCloud drive in an incremental way. Which means once you have the first 3GB backup, it will only backup the small changes between your last backup. On a 16GB iPhone, you will no longer need 3 - 4GB of free space just to backup your iPhone. You need to be sure though to turn off the 4G data usage for ALL iCloud Drive Access. iOS doen't allow you to select which App to use 4G for iCloud Drive. If you have it turned on, Whatsapp will cleverly backup itself using 4G data, it is not a lot, expect another extra 10MB - 20MB per day depending on your usage. But if you are tight on your Mobile Data you will need to make sure it is switched off.

This is the same as all other instant messenger, be it Facebook Chat, Kakotalk, Line, WeChat, etc. as long as they use iCloud.

After digging a little deeper it turns out that is the default way of how iCloud Drive works. You will always be automatically sync with all the data between your OSX or iOS devices. The idea is that, like the iMovie example, if you edited a film you shoot on your iPhone, and then decide to store it on your iCloud Drive, you MAY want to edit that later on your Mac, so iCloud will sync those to your Mac. So while your osx nsurlsessiond are downloading your few GB of 4K edited video files, you have edited your Movie file AGAIN on your iPhone. Once osx finish downloading the previous copy, it will discover a new version is found on iCloud Drive and start downloading the movie file AGAIN from the start.

Do you use Whatsapp?

BTW disabling nsurlsessionid will disable a few Auto download and update services.

SO.. my question is, is there a script I can use to purge the queue? Basically, there is text at the bottom of my finder iCloud window saying :

I know what the files are- I was making a consolidated photo library. I decided to do that over a MONTH ago... Meanwhile it takes it's sweet time hogging my bandwidth. And I'm not sure I can even access the photos in the way I'd been hoping to...

Is there a terminal command to actually clear out that queue of files waiting to upload? The script you provided works great to terminate the process (thank you for that!!), but upon reboot it just wants to keep going again. I can also completely stop the process in Little Snitch, but that also stops stuff I do want to upload also.

So my best solution would be to either, use the bandwidth like crazy and wait even LONGER for it to finish, which honestly isn't much of an issue now because I got internet service in my workspace finally. It's funny, but it never sent data like this when I used my cellular data as a wifi hotspot- Maybe AT&T blocks such things? It's only doing it on wifi.

Or somehow purge the actual queued files it still wants to send.

I had this problem, as well, and it turned out to be a problem related to Parallels (which allows a Windows machine to run on a Mac). What caused the problem was that Parallels put the Windows system file in a sub-folder labeled "Parallels" in the Documents folder of the iCloud drive. Nsurlsessiond treated the Window system file as a document and uploaded the it to the cloud whenever the Windows system was used (in my case, for Quicken). It would also then download the "revised data file" to my Macbook iCloud drive document folder - all this unnecessary backup and updating used about 40GB of data a day - causing me to go over my Comcast data cap of 1TB a month.

I worked out a resolution to this problem with Apple Support (after about 4 hours) by moving the offending Windows system file from the iCloud drive to my personal files on the Mac. Today is the first day in a while where the data usage is in the MB range, rather than the GB range. Moving the file can be complicated for mere mortals, so I suggest contacting Apple Support. I had the impression that Apple was not aware of this problem until I brought it up.
