Where have my MS icons gone in Yosemite?

I really like Yosemite, but one thing I noticed right away was that my MS document icons all turned white on the desktop. If I open a Finder window they appear in the List view, Column view and Cover Flow (does anyone use that anymore?) but not in the Icon view. Any ideas?

Indeed TinkerToolSystem 4 did the trick, and whatever the app for which you have icon problems (it restored icons for MS, torrent files, inc files, php, sitx, etc...) ! I bought it yesterday 🙂.

I wonder how the cache cleaning option of this app works because I have tried everything for manually cleaning os x caches without success...

  1. Delete the contents (including hidden files) of the following Cache folders:
    1. /Library/Caches
    2. /System/Library/Caches
    3. /Users/{YOUR_USERNAME}/Library/Caches
  2. Reboot

This worked for me.

Bought new MBP with Yosemite pre-installed a few weeks ago and had the same issue since I installed MS Office.

Deleted all files in all 3 folders as you recommended. (Just into trash) and restarted.

Problem solved, thanks! 🙂

I lost the whole desktop (except for one icon) in front of a class today after plugging an HDMI cable in, via a Moshi adapter.

I'm using a MacBook Pro 17 Mid-2011 with the latest Yosemite. I was running a 1920X1200 screen on a 1920X1080 projector

After resetting the PRAM, deleting some plists and making a few other stabs in the dark, I clicked on my desktop, which revealed the "Finder/File/Edit/View/Go/Window/Help" tabs, then I chose "View>Show View Options." I slid the "Icon Size" to the tiniest possible size, then I slid the "Grid Spacing" to the largest possible size and did a "Command+A to select all. I dragged my one Icon to the left and voila! Icons! All of those rascals were hiding just off the right side of my screen. I guess there's more than 1920, virtually speaking.

I had the same experience as Ouatataz:

Manually deleting the cache via the following steps did not work:

  1. Delete the contents (including hidden files) of the following Cache folders:
    1. /Library/Caches
    2. /System/Library/Caches
    3. /Users/{YOUR_USERNAME}/Library/Caches
  2. Reboot

However, deleting all four cache options via TinkerToolSystem 4 solved the problem.
