I really like Yosemite, but one thing I noticed right away was that my MS document icons all turned white on the desktop. If I open a Finder window they appear in the List view, Column view and Cover Flow (does anyone use that anymore?) but not in the Icon view. Any ideas?

Fix that worked for me but not for a friend of mine ...
Right-click the document icon > Show View Options
De-select "Show icon preview"

Well here is the good news. This issue was 100% fixed in El Capitan. Do a clean install of El CapIran and this issue will be no more. Yosemite had a lot of issues, but I am finding most of them have been resolved with the new OS.
Just go to View, and uncheck icon preview.

Really simple solution that worked for me. In Finder click CMD J. Uncheck the bottom box that says "Show Icon Preview", and Bingo! The traditional icons are restored in their native colors. 🙂
