iTunes 12 will not allow movies to be added

Older Mac Pro, OS 10.7.5, iTunes 12.0.1.26.

Permissions repaired, directory checked, no problems.

Hard drive is OK, plenty of space.

Been using this computer for a couple years now as my Apple TV streaming source.

---

The only movies I can appear to add are those with mp4 extension or ones I created using iMovie. Movies I have already had and added to my library that have m4v extension still remain in the library (on my media drive, so designated by iTunes Preferences and reverified that it has not changed).

Also, I cannot drag and drop even those movies that Ad File to Library will add.

So, I am just guessing, Apple has messed something up with this release.

--- A side note, on my newer Mac Pro running Yosemite and iTunes 12.0.1.26 I have the same problem. Apple did a nice job with allowing my "registered computers" to be automatically logged in to without having to enter my info. That aside, I can navigate to my other computer's media drive, select the movie - an mp4 - and it does not add to the iTunes on my Yosemite computer! Yes, I waited an appropriate time to allow cross computer getting the file, it did not appear in the reading bar.

--

I used to be able to Handbrake my movies to mp4, even with the m4v extension, and drag them onto the iTunes window and they would add. I could then Get Info and get them into the correct Genre.

-----

So, despite following the help and what and doing all the proper checks….

Just how does one add mp4 or m4v movies to the NEW iTunes?

iTunes 12 is actually better than most other upgrades, things are cleaner and more organized.

All options are still available but things have moved around a bit, especially in the "Get Info" section. IMHO, less confusing, but it takes a moment to get used to the new layout.

@Jesse,

You can still edit shows name & season if you select one file at a time, multiple edits reduces the selection in the "Details" pane.

Overall, after finishing with Handbrake you should all use Subler to populate the .m4v file with accurate metadata. Without Subler most files would default to "Home Videos", but Subler adds all the artwork, description, shows name, season, 720p/1080p info and correct categories.

Try it!

Furthermore, the proper way to add your home-brew files to iTunes is to use the designated "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder.

I keep an alias on my Desktop and every time I finish with Handbrake/Subler I just move 1 or more files into that folder.

Note, iTunes has to be up and running. It will then automatically move the file to the correct position in the library and rename it to conform with the overall structure, eg. /Users/yourname/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Movies/MovieName (1080p HD).m4v or /MovieName (HD).m4v if it's 720p .

You can manually select all the metadata in Subler, but in 99% of all cases use the search function and it will correctly populate the data you need and automatically detect SD, HD or 1080p format.

Hope this calms everybody's nerves 🙂

Fixed Permissions, and re started the computer countless times. No videos will import to iTunes since Yosemite. I have checked each movie, and TV program I wanted to import, all had read-write privileges. I converted all with Wondershare and that always added them to the library before. I even tried dragging the movie to the movie folder and use Control Open, selected them one at a time. Still did not show up in iTunes menu. So now, I have no way to watch my new movies thru my Apple TV.

I have had this problem before. I fixed it by converting it with Wondershare. Why can't Apple have iTunes tell us why it isn't importing a file? Reminds me of 'Syntax Error' in the sixties. The **** computer knew what was wrong, it just wouldn't tell us!

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

It's not about r/w privileges, it's about the metadata flags indicating what type of media it is, provided your movie file complies to mp4 format and it plays in Quicktime.

Test with a known good file and add it to iTunes 12.0.1, if you can't find it in the iTunes' Movies tab, check the "Home Videos" tab. That's where it defaults to.

I have no problems whatsoever with Yosemite & iTunes 12, just that stuff has moved around and a few things behave differently, otherwise all my movies still play and new ones can be added. rtfc!

I can confirm the behavior of iTunes moving movie files into the home movies folder by default. My meta data is set to Movie as kind, but itTunes still puts the movie into the Home Movies section and into a Home Movies folder in the finder. You can fix the former by selecting all, and changing the kind to Movie in the Get Info dialog, but it does not address the later issue of where the files are stored. Even though my files are in the Movie section of iTunes they have not moved in the Finder. This seems strange, first because I used MetaZ to add the correct metadata to these as I add then to previous versions of iTunes. I suspect that Apple has reserved the use of the Movies folder for movies purchased from the iTunes store by default. That's just a theory, though. I would need to buy a movie to test it. Has anyone had this issue?

Hi all,

So I took an iphone6 movie into iMovie on the Mac and exported as a .mov named "ducks" but somehow the metadata for the movie is called "my movie", the file filename in the Finder is "ducks"

I then used Quicktime export to add to iTunes. I could not find my movie called Ducks. When using "date added" to sort, I discovered it was in iTunes as My Movie. ugg.

I've was ripping DVD's with Handbrake trying different settings, wondering why they were not importing into iTunes. I cam across this thread and someone

mentioned that iTunes 12 is sticking my ripped movies into the Home Videos Tab under Movies. Low and behold all the movies I ripped and dragged in were there. I'm posting a picture for those of you that need a visual of where the Home Videos tab is. Cheers!

Here is a screenshot from iTunes that it works, did you navigate to "Home Videos" to see if anything was in there (pictured above)? I didn't check that area and when I did I found a ton of files I'd been dragging into iTunes under that tab. You can see in the attached image my file was encoded with Handbrake and has the extension ".m4v" I am running iTunes 12.0.1.26. Hope that helps.

You probably just forgot to check "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" & "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" .

ITunes 12 works not much different than 11. Re-read my comments above about Subler !

@bassman-md

Judging by your last response, you didn't follow the advice.

You're focused on the wrong thing. Changing settings in Handbrake has nothing to do with resulting .m4v file's metadata and the ability to add it to iTunes 12.

Universal or any iDevice setting will work and result in a file that will be added to the "Home Movies" tab.

Again, I suggest to use Subler to auto-populate the metadata after using Handbrake, then adding it to iTunes by dropping the file into the

"iTunes Media folder location"/Automatically Add to iTunes folder.
