Macbook Pro won't shut down after installing Yosemite

Hi,

I just finished installing Yosemite on my Macbook Pro. It's fairly new, the last version with a DVD drive but without retina display (I bought it in May 2014 and it's my first Mac).

I installed Yosemite, updated all my applications from the App Store and tried to shut it down from the Finder but the screen just freezes on a black screen wth the pointer showing and then I to shut it down using the power button which I hate doing.

I turned on FireVault after set up and that is busy encrypting could that be causing this? I did check online and it says you can put your Mac to sleep or shut it down while this is happening, but I haven't been able to. Any tips would be great.

Has anyone actually reported this bug? Apple doesn't read these posting.

I would also point out that, as the problem is affecting all Macs, and it has been posted under the 'MacBook Pro' heading, people might not find it. It should be under Yosemite.

Same problem here, on MacBook pro retina late 2012.

When I shutdown or restart, the computer simply freeze on a black screen with mouse visible and movable.

The longest i wait was 30 minutes before I force shutdown.

I also have file vault turned on, not sure if this contributes to the problem.

I can occasionally shutdown successfully but no idea how to reproduce the scenario.

Same here. I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina, SSD and do NOT have fireVault turned on.

Freezes when I try to shut down and wheel just spins and spins. Have to hold the power button down to shut down.

Odd thing is that I don't get the "You shut down because of a problem" dialogue when I start it back up.

I think the cause maybe different if you freeze at spin wheel instead of a dark screen with cursor only.

update: I turned off FileVault and the MacBook pro now shutdown smoothly. (It is not a fresh install, I updated it from maverick)

now trying to turn FileVault back on to see what might happen...

i also have a Mac pro and it is normal with FileVault off. But macpro is complicated I think.. Because you usually use multiple Harddisk.

I had the same problem and just fixed it.

What I did:

- Launch Disk Utility > Select Macintosh HD > Verify Disk

Let the Verify run until it's done

- If you are seeing any error try the Repair disk

It's possible you need to restart (holding cmd+r while restarting)

- Next I did a verify disk permissions and a repair disk permissions

- reboot

After this the shutdown issue was gone!

Hope this solves your problem as well.

I am having this problem with my new iMac 27" since upgrading to Yosemite. Instead of shutting down I get an endless spinning whatsit. It doesn't happen every time. I have tried the disk and permission repair. Clearly, some app or extension is not quitting but how do I track this down?

Have a look under "Macintosh HD" > "Library" > "LaunchAgents" and "LaunchDaemons" and "Preferences"

If you see files from a program that isn't installed anymore you can remove them (but take a backup before you do so, just in case 😉 )

I've read about this in another thread that describes about the same issue and it helped for some user.

Hey all,

So I have been having the exact same problem when I clean installed Yosemite on my mid-2012 MBP without retina. I found the same behaviour as everyone here, in that Finder would hang when I shut down or restarted my computer. I do not have, nor have ever had, file vault enabled, so I didn't think my problem related to that.

But one thing I did notice when I did start the computer, was the application Xtrafinder would sometimes not start. After a few times I realized that when Xtrafinder doesn't start right, I couldn't shutdown or restart. So I uninstalled this app, and now I have had four restarts go without any problem. Actually my shutdowns and start-ups are moving a little faster but that might be a subjective measurement, not objective.

So the best solution to a problem like this is to go through all app's that start with the system and disabled them one by one.

Logout and then shutdown did not work for me 😟 on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

Still hanging on Restart or Shutdown

Can freeze on black screen or even before going totally black (desktop at half brightness, dock half hidden and no curser)

Might try fresh install.

What a pain in my ***

For those out there that say "well hey it's free so they can get away with ****** early releases" The hardware needed to run it is pricey $$$$ so definitely not "free"

I used the solution provided by Structure Media and it worked. Although, the problem came back again the next day (I did install an app on that day), so I went through the steps again and it worked. The interesting thing here was that the first time I went through the fix, there were numerous errors, wish I had written them down, but it seemed to have something to do with a permission setting set at "0" and it should have been "80" - there were about 40 of these error messages. The second time, the same message appeared, but I only had 1 error (perhaps related to the 1 new install I did?)

The issue has not returned since the second fix and I have not installed or updated anything since that fix.

It is my experience that most likely what is causing this is a hanging, non-Yosemite compliant application and not the OS itself. If you clean install, and do not restore, this problem goes away. As soon as you restore from previous backups (Time Machine) the problem re-occurs. In my case it was Xtrafinder that was hanging. I recommend going through the login items (System Preferences -> Users and Groups -> Login Items) and removing all of them, and bring them back one at a time.

Method suggested by Structure Media solved my problem.

Thanks a lot!!

I use Mid 2012 Retina Macbook Pro.

Following are the steps I took:

0. Turn off filevault.

1. Remove everything in LaunchAgent folder etc. (If you run a server then don't remove the server-related plist.)

2. Repair Disk Permission twice. (The second time is used for ensuring permission problem are solved.)

3. Unplug power cable then turn on filevault. (Previously when I turn on filevault, the computer freeze and did not restart automatically before starting encryption. I am not sure if this cause any problem. But by unplugging power cable, encryption won't start, and the computer was able to restart without freezing. After that I plug in the cable and wait for hours for encryption and optimisation.)

4. I did restart once during optimisation. (No reason, just want to describe what I have done.)

5. After optimisation is completed, I logged out, then shutdown. No freezing. (Not pressing shutdown directly.)

6. Turn on and login. Then pressed shutdown directly. No freezing. (3 times while I write this post.)

One thing worth mentioning: Previously when my computer freeze at shutdown (black screen with cursor movable) while filevault is ON, I noticed I need to enter password TWICE at startup. (Power button -> FileVault password screen -> computer auto restart -> Apple logo screen with load bar -> login password screen -> desktop). Now for the case without freezing, the startup as same as before: only need to enter password ONCE at file vault startup screen, followed by load bar then desktop.

Hope my case helps.

This is what I found while repairing disk. It can't fix it. Any ideas guys how to fix that.
