Macbook Pro won't shut down after installing Yosemite

Same problem here, on MacBook pro retina late 2012.

When I shutdown or restart, the computer simply freeze on a black screen with mouse visible and movable.

The longest i wait was 30 minutes before I force shutdown.

I also have file vault turned on, not sure if this contributes to the problem.

I can occasionally shutdown successfully but no idea how to reproduce the scenario.

Same here. I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina, SSD and do NOT have fireVault turned on.

Freezes when I try to shut down and wheel just spins and spins. Have to hold the power button down to shut down.

Odd thing is that I don't get the "You shut down because of a problem" dialogue when I start it back up.

i've got same problem late 2012 Mac pro with SSd and fireVault turned on. very frustrating. just did a clean install.

I think the cause maybe different if you freeze at spin wheel instead of a dark screen with cursor only.

update: I turned off FileVault and the MacBook pro now shutdown smoothly. (It is not a fresh install, I updated it from maverick)

now trying to turn FileVault back on to see what might happen...

i also have a Mac pro and it is normal with FileVault off. But macpro is complicated I think.. Because you usually use multiple Harddisk.

I had the same problem and just fixed it.

What I did:

- Launch Disk Utility > Select Macintosh HD > Verify Disk

Let the Verify run until it's done

- If you are seeing any error try the Repair disk

It's possible you need to restart (holding cmd+r while restarting)

- Next I did a verify disk permissions and a repair disk permissions

- reboot

After this the shutdown issue was gone!

I tried this step but it didn't work. I tried turning off fire vault and then turning it back on. That didn't work either. Seems to be a bug with Yosemeti.

Same problem here. Macbook Pro 15 w/Retina Display. New, purchased in September, upgraded to Yosemite a couple of days ago, updated apps yesterday. I get the dark screen with the cursor showing.

I am having this problem with my new iMac 27" since upgrading to Yosemite. Instead of shutting down I get an endless spinning whatsit. It doesn't happen every time. I have tried the disk and permission repair. Clearly, some app or extension is not quitting but how do I track this down?

Have a look under "Macintosh HD" > "Library" > "LaunchAgents" and "LaunchDaemons" and "Preferences"

If you see files from a program that isn't installed anymore you can remove them (but take a backup before you do so, just in case 😉 )

I've read about this in another thread that describes about the same issue and it helped for some user.

Tried repairing disk permission and looked under "LaunchAgents" and "LaunchDaemons" and "Preferences".

didn't work still same problem

did a clean install (Harddisk formatted), once I enable FileVault the same problem came up again...

decided to give up FileVault for now.

I disabled FireVault, still the same for me. The Black screen of death 😮😮😮😮😮😮

Just noticed something, if i log out first then restart it works fine. but if i restart without logging out it gets stuck again.

Same here and FileVault is not on. Repaired permissions to no avail. Still does not shutdown. I have to press the on/off switch to force shutdown. Everytime since I installed Yosemite. Hope I am not damaging my MacBook Pro.
