2010 Mac Pro + Yosemite + Radeon 7950

Hey all,

So, I'm running a 2010 Mac Pro (8-core, 42 GB RAM, OS X 10.9.5) with a Radeon Sapphire 7950 graphics card. Curious if anyone has encountered any issues with Yosemite on a configuration like this, particularly with the 7950. No reason to think the graphics chip would stop working, but worth a call-out!

Thanks.

J

Arsen - you have a different card from me and your solution required changing the slot the card is installed in. That does not constitute a full fix. I'm wondering if the other cards people mentioned here like the 5870 work as installed by Apple with the 10.10.2 patch.

Hearing from someone at Apple would be nice. There's also an ongoing problem with Nvidia GTX cards on all versions of Yosemite and 10.9.5 that is particularly bad while using Adobe CC. https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/961633#963199

Seems like there is a major break in Mavericks GPU handling. This needs to be addressed immediately by Apple as its affecting even 2014 MBPs.

Arsen, are you using Safari or a different browser? After giving up Safari in favor of Chrome, my Sapphire 7950 is working well, too. But just for fun I opened Safari again and the 3-5 second freezes returned. Guess I'll wait for 10.10.3 before trying that again.

So as long as you're happy with Chrome, Firefox, or another alternate browser, you should be good in Yosemite.

I have the 7950 and have been having lock-ups in Safari ever since I moved to Yosemite. I tested with my stock 5770 and didn't have issues. Clearly some sort of software glitch. I since went with an NVIDIA GTX 680, with no issues whatsoever.

I got a replacement Sapphire 7950 card under warranty, and that didn't fix the issue. Speaking with their techs it's clearly some kind of graphics driver issue in Safari. I don't get the issues in Chrome or Firefox. I also don't get the hangs when I boot in Safe Mode, which suggests it's a Quartz or Open CL problem.

However, I personally prefer Safari as my browser.

10.10.2 does not resolve the issue. I didn't have any problems in Mavericks.

The 10.10.3 public beta (which was released today with the Photos app) has newer AMD drivers. version 1.32.9 instead of 1.30.5 in 10.10.2. Just briefly using Safari since the update shows that it's mostly fixed with 10.10.3. I wouldn't have updated the machine except that I was dying to go back to Safari. I really don't care for Chrome or Firefox, and I really wanted to have my bookmarks.

Yeah, unfortunately, I'm still experiencing the occasional full-system beachball freeze with my Sapphire 7950 on Yosemite with the public beta. I've done what Arsen suggested but apparently I'm just unlucky. In fact, I grabbed a tiny 64GB SSD off the shelf and installed Mavericks just to make sure it's not the card going bad. No problems on 10.9.5, but 10.10.3 PB still has it. Last night I also wiped the main SSD that I had Yosemite on, installed 10.10.2 and didn't restore anything from Time Machine. Same issues, so I went ahead and restored. Reset PRAM earlier today. Same thing. I will say that the pauses are shorter in PB than they were in 10.10.2, though.

So in the public beta I used Feedback Assistant and learned how to do screen captures with Quicktime Player. I've taken video of the stutters, and the stutters are in the video. So Apple has some proof as to what happens.

edit: Wait. Arsen, are you saying you switched the BIOS switch to position 2 (PC mode)? So you don't get the boot screen, but the card works OK in OS X? That means for sure it's a BIOS/driver issue with the Hamachi personality that's used with the card in EFI mode. I'll try that out and report back.
