Tagging working differently in iTunes 12 ?

Like zillions of others, I upgraded to OS X Yosemite and iTunes 12. I am seeing some different behavior in iTunes 12, however, when trying to tag media content.

1. Per the attached example of a movie in my iTunes library, in List View the artist appears as Serra Hirsch (which is the correct artist). In CMD-I View, however, Serra Hirsch appears as the Director (she is not the Director).

2. I do not think the Director tag existed in iTunes 11. I was using the Album Artist field to hold the director's name in iTunes 11. Maybe Director is a new tag, but it does not show up in View > View Options > Show Columns. So I'm sure if it's a real tag or not.

3. Other fields (e.g., Grouping) do not appear in CMD-I View, and I do not see how to add them. So I cannot edit them in CMD-I view. I can still edit the tag data in List view, but that is tedious.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

I wouldn't do that, I'd leave it as is if I were you. What's the big deal anyway? If you're using playlists for Apple TV, they still make sense. The artwork view works fine, too. The only confusion is the CMD-I view. But then again, how many times do you actually use that when consuming your media? I guess never. It's solely for editing purposes. I can live with that, plus there's a pretty good chance Apple will fix or change it all over again in the future. I fail to see why I should give up on my logic and follow Apple only because their developers are being irrational.

Also, you should definitely consider using an advanced tagger. I for one prefer Tune-Instructor. It will do pretty much anything you could possibly ask for: Search & Replace, Copy & Swap, Upper & Lower Case, Cut Tags, Expand Tags, and much more. Get it here—it's free and easy once you've figured how it works: http://www.tune-instructor.com

I don't think it can handle the "hidden" tags, e.g. Director, though.

But I don't use Playlists and the Mac is directly connected as my home theatre PC. It's fine, I finished with the directors and am over it. I used a couple of Doug's scripts to verify the library integrity and all seems well. I have a few good programs (iDentify and Subler) to deal with new media, so I'm set. Let iTunes throw its worst at me! 🙂

And not only that—custom movie artwork with dimensions different from iTunes' default aspect ratio is now being forced into its placeholder template, resulting in squeezed images that look odd.

The dimensions of my movie posters are 600 × 888, which corresponds to the official US movie poster aspect ratio. And that's how I've been dealing with movie artwork for years.

I haven't checked the album artwork yet—I only hope those images are not affected. I use a couple of different dimensions, coming from various sources, including booklets, cardboard sleeves, digipaks, and boxed sets (imagine forcing the latter into a square template). Needless to say, I prefer to keep the original aspect ratio of respective artwork scans.

iTunes used to be fun and all, but those updates keep getting worse—in fact, they're completely useless and unnecessary. It's really annoying. It's time to look for a new alternative.

Has anyone run into not seeing the newly added content? I don't have an apple computer anymore, but still use iTunes and it's really hit and miss.

The files are in the folder, I have added the folder, but they won't show up.

I have tried adding them by dragging them from the folder to itunes, by selecting them individually from the menu options and by adding the whole folder, nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

I haven't checked yet, but it seems that Apple may have heard us. Here's what comes with the latest update, iTunes 12.1.2:

Mac

This update improves support for syncing photos to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch from the new Photos app for OS X. In addition, this update also adds several refinements to the Get Info window and improves overall stability.

Windows

This update adds several refinements to the Get Info window and improves overall stability.

Can anyone confirm the "refinements to the Get Info window" part? For better or worse . . .
