Why won't my mac recognize my iphone?

When I connect my iphone 4 to my macbook and open up Itunes, it doesn't show that any device is connected. I've tried using a different usb cable, I've tried restarting my computer, I've tried restarting my phone, closing out of itunes, using a different computer, and almost anything I can think of. I want to transfer my music from my mac to my phone so I don't have to buy the music again on my phone. Any ideas of how to fix this problem?

iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.2

have you updated to the latests version of itunes ad tried another usb port and cable ?

Thank you so much for replying so quickly, but sadly I have updated to the latest version of itunes, tried a new usb cable, and I also have iOs 7.1.2 which at the moment is the latest my phone will let me get. I don't think it's a problem with updating things. Any other ideas?

I Would try another computer need not be a mac windows would do if other computer also did not detect the phone then i would suspect that the connector of you phone being defect

Thank you so much for your reply. I have tried with another computer, two in fact: one was a friend's mac, and another was a windows. No computer recognizes my iphone.

I had this problem. I followed all the advice - re-installed all the latest versions of all the required software and restarted all the devices and still the same problem. THEN - I got a new cable, cleaned the port on my phone with a toothbrush and switch cleaner and everything worked fine. Simple solution but sometimes the obvious answer is right there in front of us.
