Photo Screen Saver not functioning with Yosemite Upgrade

Recently I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Yosemite. I have always used a folder in iPhoto for my screen saver via system preferences. Ever since the upgrade this folder will no longer function as the screen saver. The screen saver option in System Preferences always defaults to Apples National Geographic photos that is installed with Yosemite. After I select the folder I want I "preview" the screen saver and my photos are there. Once the screen saver kicks itself in, the NG photos are there and the system settings are back to NG photos and not my photos. Now, I will admit the NG photos are far above my photos, but I really prefer my photos. Is Apple evaluating photo quality on the screen savers? Kidding - any ideas?

I just installed 10.10.4, and the problem is worse than ever. When I specify "Shifting Tiles", and "Shuffle slide order", and then try to specify my Pictures / Photos Library, the "Photos Library" (as well as my old "iPhoto Library") is greyed out. When I choose the "Pictures" directory, the screen saver shows the first photo repeated 10 times, and doesn't show any other pictures. Same for "Sliding Panels", etc. Where is Apple Quality going?

Apparently, from what I hear, Apple is going to address these weird bugs in the next update.

While I solved my issue by the suggestions above, I also found that it "stuck" if I followed another suggestion someone gave--to leave the system preferences open, but minimized. That allowed me to shuffle the order. If I closed the system preferences, I couldn't shuffle.

What happens if you try that?

(I really hope they give a permanent fix in the next update--for real--as it's ridiculous to have to jury rig what should be operating correctly@!)

I have today updated to Yosemite 10.10.4.

My iMac, which DIDN'T have the screensaver folder selection problem in 10.10.3, is still ok.

My MacBook, which DID have the screen saver selection problem in 10.10.3, now works fine with 10.10.4. I am now able to select the photo folder I want as the screen savers, just as I used to in Mavericks.

So 10.10.4 release has solved the problem as far as I am concerned. (Although I still have no idea why the problem showed on a MacBook and not an iMac in 10.10.3).

I'd say this is definitely a Mac issue and not caused by third party software.

Due to other issues..(SSD failure) i have done a complete bare bones re install of 10.10.4, not even using Migration Assistant..a clean instal and manually copying what I needed from eh TM volume, then not adding any third party software.

And there is not option to choose a iPhoto Library in 10.10.4. it only allows folder selection.

I am using iPhoto still and not the new god awful 'Photos' app.

I wonder if this another attempt my Apple to make us do what they want, rather than what we want.

If you haven't already, try (from previous post page 1):

  • Close all windows and quit all applications.
  • Hold the option key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menubar.
  • Select "Library" from the dropdown, then "Preferences" folder.
  • Look for these two files.
  • com.apple.desktop.plist
  • com.apple.systempreferences.plist
  • Right click each one of those and select "Move To Trash" from the contextual menu.
  • Restart the computer.

Worked for me in 10.10.4.

It does seem like a crazy workaround. I just upgraded with a new MAC and updated the software (OS X El Capitan v10.11.1) and my photos quit showing in screensaver. Screen goes black and says No Photos. It worked last week until I updated. And it looks like this has been a problem for a long time. The workaround does work (thanks!) but why doesn't apple fix it after all this time?
