Photo Screen Saver not functioning with Yosemite Upgrade

Recently I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Yosemite. I have always used a folder in iPhoto for my screen saver via system preferences. Ever since the upgrade this folder will no longer function as the screen saver. The screen saver option in System Preferences always defaults to Apples National Geographic photos that is installed with Yosemite. After I select the folder I want I "preview" the screen saver and my photos are there. Once the screen saver kicks itself in, the NG photos are there and the system settings are back to NG photos and not my photos. Now, I will admit the NG photos are far above my photos, but I really prefer my photos. Is Apple evaluating photo quality on the screen savers? Kidding - any ideas?

After buying a new Mac running Yosemite, I added my photo library from an external drive and opened iPhoto, It prompted me to get the new Photos app (since my new Mac needed some Yosemite updates). Once I upgraded to Photos, I lost my desktop/screensaver options to choose my own photos. I also couldn't pull any of my own photos into the Media tab in Pages, Keynote, etc. When I checked my Photo library (in Mac HD/Users/name/Pictures), I noticed I had an iPhoto Library and a Photos Library. My computer was trying to access the old iPhoto Library.

This worked for me: I followed the instructions from Apple to "Designate a System Photo Library in Photos," so it would follow the path to my new Photos Library associated with the Photos app. Here is the link to the Apple Support topic: Designate a System Photo Library in Photos - Apple Support

I've shut down and restarted a few times and done other work since then, and so far it's working. Good luck!

My final solution, after trying everything in here about three times (except for reinstalling Yosemite), was to save the Nat Geo pictures into a separate folder on my desktop, then go back into the default/library folder, delete all the pictures from there, then copy all my wanted photos into the Nat Geo folder. So now my laptop can default as much as its little heart is happily pleased to do and I'll have the pictures I want.

I have just updated to Yosemite.... wanted to wait 6 months to let everyone else sort the bugs out.

I now have this problem - screen saver reverts to National Geographic photos rather than the folder I set.

I've tried one of the suggested 'fixes' - deleting a couple of plist files, and restarting, but this didn't work for me.

I've logged a bug with Apple.... I want it properly fixed....

I tried every suggestion I found several times, stopping short of uninstalling and reinstalling the OS. What I finally had to do (as I posted in here) was "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." I copied the National Geographic folder to save the photos, then, in the original one, I deleted the photos and copied/pasted in the ones I want my laptop to use. So it's pointing to the National Geographic folder, but it's using the pictures I want (about 500+ astronomy photos.)

I realize this isn't a proper fix as you want, but it's an option. Hopefully this weird bug of the defaulting to the National Geographic photo folder will be fixed with the next OS update.

(It's so weird how for some people the OS doesn't do this, but for others it does.)

Ha ha, thank you for re highlighting this. I saw your original post but ignored it as it clearly wasn't a 'fix' but more of a 'fudge'.

However, there are no 'fixes', and your option really does work, thank you very much!

I have my screen savers working now using this 'tell it they are really national Geographic' option.

I have logged a formal bug with Apple on the problem and will post here when I get a response from Apple.... in the mean time I'll continue to load my bext pictures into two folders - as screen savers for 'now' and 'future' (when fixed properly).

best regards

Tony

So my MacBook screensaver is working ok now that I've implemented HCSelf71's "fix" of putting MY photos in the National Geographic folder.

Apple haven't classified the bug I filed yet... not surprising, its hardly "critical", but is is annoying.

But I have an update today. Having successfully upgraded the MacBook Pro to Yosemite (apart from the screensaver problem), I decided to do the same with my iMac. Its not the same!!

1. The installation was very painful, with the implementation of the to downloaded Yosemite file 'hanging' for many hours. Eventually I had to kill the machine, and when I re started, Yosemite was installed!?

2. This screen saver bug IS NOT THERE on the iMac!!! All my screen saver pictures come up, as before.

The only difference, as far as I can see, is that on the MacBook I had 'iCloud Photo Library' checked (as well as 'My Photo Stream' and iCloud Photo Sharing') whereas on the iMac I don't have 'iCloud Photo Library' checked - but I do have the other two.

Apple have now marked the bug I reported on this problem as a duplicate, and they says its 'resolved'. I assume that means "resolved in a future release of

Yosemite"?

This is the bug as I reported it..(below) Note they say its a duplicate of 18871883, which is a whole 2.6 million bugs before the one I logged!!! Unfortunately they don't give me any further information as to when the 'resolution' will be implemented. But I guess 10.10.4 will be out soon (beta releases out now), so we might find out soon...
