Photo Screen Saver not functioning with Yosemite Upgrade

Recently I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Yosemite. I have always used a folder in iPhoto for my screen saver via system preferences. Ever since the upgrade this folder will no longer function as the screen saver. The screen saver option in System Preferences always defaults to Apples National Geographic photos that is installed with Yosemite. After I select the folder I want I "preview" the screen saver and my photos are there. Once the screen saver kicks itself in, the NG photos are there and the system settings are back to NG photos and not my photos. Now, I will admit the NG photos are far above my photos, but I really prefer my photos. Is Apple evaluating photo quality on the screen savers? Kidding - any ideas?

I have a possible solution.

I have two (early 2008) Mac Pros and one Macbook Pro on Yosemite using (almost) the same iPhoto library (it’s copied to the other machines, not shared). On one Mac Pro, I keep having this issue, where at some point it switches over to the Nat Geo pictures. This machine is hardly ever turned off or restarted, it only sleeps.

The other machines have been fine—no issues (also only sleeps).

I have not tried deleting preference files to fix this issue.

On a whim, I rebuilt the iPhoto database completely on the offending machine. It’s been several days, and it’s been fine.

In the process of copying my iPhoto library, I’ve rebuilt the database on the machines that have been working, which is why I thought I’d try this.

To rebuild, hold down the Option and Command keys while starting iPhoto. At some point a dialog box called Photo Library First Aid will open up. I chose the last option, Rebuild Database. This can take a while, depending on the size of your iPhoto library. (Mine is 260 GB, and it took a while. I went to clean the basement, so I don’t know exactly how long it took.)

Using my iPhoto database as a screen saver is really important for me. I have a Mac Pro attached to my tv, and I use it as a giant picture frame of my “best of” family photos. It’s the easiest way to see from the thousands of family photos we have. A lot of times, we never go through all those photos we take if they’re on our computer.

From my experience, the problem has nothing to do with iPhoto libraries. My Mac Mini running Yosemite uses a DropBox folder for screen saver images... but it still reverts back to the National Geographic images after a random amount of time.

Leaving the Preferences window minimized seems to be an effective work-around for me, but it's a dumb solution to an annoying problem.

It’s also possible that there are multiple issues that cause this problem. I’m sorry that it may not solve your issue. It solved mine.

Mine would revert to Nat Geo after a few hours. It’s been several days, and now I have no issues. I’ve never had an issue with 2 other computers where I’ve done this same thing. Correlation is not causation, but I’m going to go with this voodoo for now.

Just for fun, you could try to do this to you iPhoto library, but still use the Dropbox folder. I can see an issue where Screen Saver looks to the iPhoto library (whether you use it or not) as part of its routine, and if there’s a problem, it immediately goes to a default folder. That’s why this could happen even with non-iPhoto folders.

In the spirit of experimentation, I think it’s worth a try. What do you have to lose?
