Mail SMTP (outgoing) does not work after Yosemite upgrade

I have just updated Yosemite on my Mac and MacBook Air and the outgoing mails cannot be sent - the SMTP-connection fails.

It worked fully Ok few seconds before the upgrade was started.

So, I wonder if anyone or Apple can help on getting the Outgoing mails to work again.

I have had the problem with Mail not connecting to one of my ISPs, and could not find a fix other than allowing insecure authentication - which I am very reluctant to do.

Today I was at work, using my MacBook Air, and I noticed that it was connecting OK. So at home I rechecked my iMac, but it was still not connecting. Then I compared the settings in Mail > Preferences > Advanced, and saw that they were different.

- the working account on my MacBook Air: port 995, Use SSL checked

- the failed account on my iMac: port 110, Use SSL unchecked.

I checked the Use SSL box, and the port instantly changed from 110 to 995, and the connection succeeded.

Try this and see whether it helps - it may simply be the case with this particular ISP?

Update: Mail broke again on my iMac - see the details of my two computers outlined above - and when I checked the Advanced tab in Mail Preferences, I found that the port had reverted to 110 and Use SSL had reverted to unchecked.

So I checked Use SSL, the port then switched automatically to 995, and the connection to my ISP was re-established.

I contacted Apple, am in touch with a senior techie.Of course neither the senior guy or the first rung technician knew anything about the SMTP issue.

The junior guy suggested starting in SAFE MODE so no plug ins or extensions load.

I did , made sure my Mail account preferences were correct ( My ISP does not require or recommend SSL, for instance).saved, restarted into normal and so far(( two days) ok

(Safe Mode = restart and after restart when you see the gray screen immediately hold down SHIFT Key

If it is done correctly when the Mac comes up do not be concerned if you see some rolling lines scrolling from bottom to top

When your normal splash screen comes up you will see , in red, at upper right hand corner of screen "Safe Mode"

Maybe that will help

Have my own servers as well. Problem seems to be related to something corrupted in mail's plethora of support files.

i have created a new user account on the Mac and am piecemeal transitioning to the other user account with the hopes that Mail will rebuild the files it creates as I import the mail folders. It is a long and tedious process.

The tipping point was when Mail started to constantly crash. Interestingly enough, it is also crashing several times a day on my iPhone as well. Same buggy code by all appearances.

I've owned nothing but Mac since 1985 and Mail / Calendar / Contacts are the buggiest most unstable products Apple has ever produced. So much potential, so little dillegence. :-(

I have Godaddy e-mails in the office and the outgoing smtp did’t work anymore. After trying everything from many different blogs and three weeks of stress, I finally found a very simple solution which might works for others as well. Since I can reproduce the problem on three different Macintosh in the office (MacBook, Mac Mini and new iMac all with Yosemite): I’m connecting the computer by cable and Wifi with the Internet and when smtp still doesn’t work I’m changing the location (in System Preferences, Network). Very strange but it worked. Of course this is far from ideal, but we can sent again e-mails and I’m hoping for an quick update of Yosemite.

At last I have my two smtp servers ( one for pop accounts and other for imac ) on line and working ok.

After lots of trying I find this configuration is working very well

User uploaded file

My servers are not SSL and if they are, the port number must be 465 or 587.

But, if I remove the tick on Use SSL the servers became off line . I don’t understand this configuration but is working well.

You can try this and report

I have the same problem, but only to one SMTP outgoing server of the five I use.

The culprit is an IMAP server - perfectly useable if accessed as a web server, but not if accessed through Apple Mail. Any attempt to set the 'right' parameters (SSL, Port no.) in Mail/Preferences/Advanced is in vain, as somehow they have been reset when next viewed.

I have tried "Automatically detect and maintain account settings both on and off, to no avail. I too had no issues at first after installing Yosemite, then the problem outgoing SMTP appeared.

Mystified.

I am not going to blunder around in the guts of Mail - that's not why I have been using Macs since 1984.

Needs Apple's urgent attention.
