Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable. I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help. My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution. Need help.

I am also having issues with lag since upgrading to Yosemite ... never activated FileVault so that isn't the issue but the Graphics has been very lag & running multiple java pages has become very slow ... any suggestions would be gratefully received:

Back up to speed after upgrading to OS X Yosemite but only after using EtreCheck report after performing many of the suggestions here and allowing FileVault to finish its encryption process but I still have a couple of "invalid" launch daemons/agents listed in my report that I do not know what they are or how to remove them. Any help is appreciated.

I'm guessing my issue might be different. My computer is taking many minutes to even boot and get past the security screen. I went to bed last night and things were just fine. I had upgraded to Yosemite a few days ago and haven't had any problems. I wake up this morning to this. I can try some of the solutions listed here, but ... if even possible ... it is going to take a long, long, time.

(I thought the issue might be VMWare. I changed the allocated RAM space for it a couple days ago with no issues. However, I have (I think properly) removed it)

I should add that after about 10 minutes (or more) I can get it to fully boot. However, it is also very slow then, too.

I can't imagine what happened during the night while I was sleeping. (It's quiet as a mouse. No fan. No hard drive noise.)

8GB Ram on a (I think) mid-2011 MacBook Pro.

hi Old Toad

I have the same problem but when I tried your suggestion to download Aclr8, i got as far as a terminal-looking screen where i had to enter a password and i don't have one....never used terminal in my life..

but my mac book is nearly unusable at times

things like spotify take 5 minutes to open (have deleted the cache to try and help)

ram is always at 1 per cent even with only a couple of apps open

i had the macbook at genius bar and they reinstalled yosemite and are also now at a loss as to know why it is running so slow

beachballs, beachballs, beachballs

Oct 23, 2014 9:58 AM in response to hunttvillage

Like many others commenting here, I am also having problems with the speed of my MacBook Pro 17" after updating to Yosemite. Booting up to the log-in screen is taking longer. Logging in is taking longer. Connecting to the internet is taking longer. Opening drives and directories takes longer. Closing drives and directories takes longer. Minimizing and Maximizing takes longer. Launching applications takes longer. Quitting applications takes longer. Everything takes longer - a lot longer. I'm constantly getting the "spinner" where I almost never got it before.

48 hours prior to installing the Yosemite OS, I installed ClamXav (http://www.clamxav.com) and two NetSpot WiFi Utilities.

24 hours prior to installing the Yosemite OS, I uninstalled VirtualBox and my Canon T3i Applications. I also uninstalled a few supportive applications for the Miller's Pro-Studio Applications (Photography Processing Apps), though I did NOT uninstall all the Studio Apps.

Even after these modifications, I didn't have any noticeable decrease in performance, until after Yosemite was installed. Below is my EtreCheck report:

Problem description:

System is sluggish since Yosemite Update. No new software (other than EtreCheck) has been installed since the update to Yosemite and system was not slow/sluggish before the update to Yosemite.

I have been following this thread carefully since my 2010 MBP had many of the same issues that have been listed here. I believe what fixed things for me was Resetting my SMC and zapping the PRAM (with Permission fixes as well). But a common thread that I've seen is the FileVault stuff.

I decided to compile a list of 13 things that people can try to fix the slow-down, lagginess issue and posted here: http://www.hightechdad.com/2014/10/23/13-tips-optimize-mac-yosemite-installation / .

It would be great to find out what items worked and what items I missed.

I'm going to try to respond to your comment, though it is quite garbled.

I am assuming "Virtual of" is VirtualBox and "Can on" is the Canon Camera software. I moved these software titles from the applications folder, to the trash and used the "Secure Empty Trash" option.

I've never had an issue with Teamviewer, before the upgrade and I'm not sure what you meant by "Sou r lower" in your comment. That one I can't seem to figure out.

Sorry about that. Darn iPhone and fat fingers! No what I meant to say is that TeamViewer and SoundFlower (that is the mystery reference) do not play nicely with OSXs or some combination of OS X features. But as I have shown above, you have not removed those programs you said you have removed, the only way being to go to the Developer's website and follow their instructions on how to uninstall. Sometimes merely dragging an icon to Trash is simply not enough to get rid of all it's elements. Also, as you can see, something is driving your Pages-Out swapping to almost 4GB!! Personally, I would back up and reinstall Yosemite, as quite a few OS X Launch Agents and Daemons seem to be failing at startup.

Cheers

Pete

I know the "Secure Empty Trash" method doesn't always get everything - a bad habit I got in to. I used to only install apps which were available through Apple's App Store. For those apps, moving to the Trash and "Secure Empty Trash" seemed to do the trick (not always, but most of the time).

I'm really curious about the "splashtop" items as that app never quite seemed to work correctly and I got rid of it months ago. It was installed through Apple's App Store, so, as I stated above, I figured moving to the Trash and "Secure Empty Trash" would have taken care of it. I'm definitely going to look into that issue.

I'm not married to SoundFlower, though it seems to be the only reliable solution to pass sound from desktop applications to QuickTime's Screen Recording option.

TeamViewer has been a staple application on every system I've owned (Mac, Linux & iOS), in the last 5 years (or longer). I've never had an issue with it and I'd have to find another viable, cross-platform, remote desktop app, before I can get rid of it.

I would like to know more about the items listed below:
