Q: Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable.  I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help.  My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution.  Need help.

I'd reinstall the system from the Recovery volume.

    Thx Old Toad!

I have already reinstalled Yosemite twice (but never from the Recovery volume, only through the AppStore).

Is installing it from the Recovery Volume going to have any different effect?

I have also already tried a few other things:

    + new install

    + verify disk permissions

    + SMC-Reset

    + PRAM Reset (Cmd+P+R)

    I really appreciate your help!

I don't think it's any different but a lot easier.  Be sure to repair disk permissions and the disk before trying.

How do I do this?  My system won't even back up to time machine.  That plan went right out the window.

Like the others, I have slow scrolling and also have Finder continuously going in and out of non-responding.

Here's my runs of EtreCheck both in Safe mode and in normal mode:

    Problem description:

In Safe mode scrolling doesn’t work.

In normal mode Finder doesn’t respond even after relaunch - many times; and scrolling is very sluggish and make big jumps a while after trying to scroll.

So I spent the entire night trying to repair stuff. The disk checks okay and can't be repaired. The permissions return an error, even after repair. Some i/o error on some linguistics-file (System/Library/LinguisticData/en/lm.dat). And repairing stuff did nothing to improve the usability of the computer. (It's gone so far I really can't do much of anything when it's running, even opening a Finder-window stalls.)

I updated everything I could update using App Store (Adobe's site wouldn't load, so I couldn't update Flash), but that didn't help.

Reinstalling Yosemite didn't help either. The "time remaining"-bar screen where it says it'll download additional files and then reboot just kept increasing, so I left it to run overnight. It was up to well over 6 hours by the time I fell asleep. Woke up to a reinstalled, yet still extremely slow, computer. Still nothing works.

I am now going to try and restore Mavericks using Time Machine.

    Hi Elvstigen!

I also spent a lot of time last night trying things out, because nobody could really help me...

Now I might have found a solution to my problem, but it is too early to be sure.

Maybe you want to give it a shot!

I noticed in my "activity monitor" under "memory" the process "Folder Actions Dispatcher" was using a lot of memory.

If you are experiencing the same, disabling it might help:

Go to any folder, right click, "Services", "Folder Actions Setup", uncheck "Enable Folder Actions".

Since then the my Macbook´s performance has increased drastically.

    All the best!

    Phil

Thank you, Phil. I am running a restore from an earlier backup now; I'll know tonight if it worked. If it did indeed work, I will not be attempting another shot at installing Yosemite...

I'm having similar problems. The UI has become very unresponsive on my 2011 MBP. It even gets a lot worse when connecting an external monitor (via VGA adapter). I performed the disc verification, SMC and PRAm reset, but it hasn't made much difference so far.

Next time I'm going to wait a little longer before upgrading... wish I made a recent backup of Mavericks!

    Hi pindelauf!

Have you checked your activity monitor for "Folder Actions Dispatcher"?
If so, try disabling it as I described above. Let me know if that was helpful!

    Hi Phil,

Thanks of the lightning fast response. "Unfortunately" I have no "Folder Actions Dispatcher" running. I ran Etrecheck and did find at least one thing I could do: update Adobe Flash (minor update). But the UI remains clunky and unresponsive.

    The status quo:

    Too bad...

For what it´s worth, you might wanna try disabling / deinstalling the 3rd party app "TotalFinder Application"...

Thanks Phil. Yep, TotalFinder is a good one: I have removed it immediately. No direct improvements, unfortunately. But that was not expected either.

This was my issue as well(FileVault2 enabled) and once the 750 gig drive was encrypted my MBP returned to it's excellent performance. The process took almost 25 hours.

    Thank you for posting this.
