Yosemite download is insanely slow (nothing wrong with my network)

Hi all, I'm trying to upgrade to Yosemite from Mavericks, or rather, I have been trying for the last 2 days. The download from the Mac store is crawling at a crazy slow rate. I've pulled about 1GB in 2 days now. It seems to get like 1MB downloaded every few minutes and the Mac Store progress says there's like 4 days left.

I've run all sorts of speed checks on my network and nothing is out of the ordinary, I can go off and download other files at over 1 MB/sec right now.

I'm at a loss as to what to do, there's not really any support for how to find out what's going on and I don't think there's anywhere other than the Mac Store I can download this from.

Does anyone else have experience with extremely slow, persisting issues with the Mac Store downloads? Any suggestions?

Thank you

Im also in the Vancouver area and had this same slow download issue. Tried the DNS change to googles and issue was still there. What made mine go full speed was pausing the download, and instead of hitting resume, I went to the featured page on the App Store and clicked the download button on Yosemite. Finished the remainIMG 3+ gb in 40mins. No idea why this worked for me.

now I'm having the slow download/fail update on my iPad. 124 hours to go it says then stops after 3 hours.

I started my Yosemite download at 2:15 yesterday and it is still downloading. I got so concerned I called Apple. The only thing they recommend is to make sure you modem is connected directly to your computer and shut off Wi Fi on the computer; which I did. I can still use my cell phone with Wi Fi. The last thing they can do is have you take your computer into the store and they will install the Yosemite software. I live too far from their store so letting my computer run day and night. I am now at 2.59 GM and it is 7:49 PM.

I too am taking a long time to download and called Apple store. You can continue to download for two to four days, or take your computer into the store and have them install it for you. I live too far away. I started at 2:15 PM yesterday and it is 7:54 PM this evening and I am now at 2.59 GB. I don't understand why Apple didn't put this huge program on a disk for us to buy and install.

Once again, same situation. Dial-up speeds for Yosemite download.

Yesterday's download of XCode came down at the expected 45-50Mbit/s, but not for Yosemite.

I too, have tried changing the DNS servers etc, to no avail.

The problem seems to be common on Telus. I'm on Telus OpTik in Creston, BC

I did find a way around the problem. I paused the download in the App Store, then cranked up the VPN with an end-point in San Jose, CA and I went from an estimate of "5 days 10 hours" to approximately 1 hour.

So there is a major problem between Apple's Yosemite servers and Telus.

I subscribe to a Virtual Private Network service that provides an encrypted link between my computer and an "end-point" provided by the service. Once I'm connected to the VPN my internet presence, IP address etc., is assigned at the end-point rather than my own ISP. So, in essence I'm going "around" the problem as the hiccup seems to be between Apple and Telus. My connection is now between Apple and the VPN provider's end-point in San Jose, CA.

Hope this helps!

so is Telus somehow throttling the downloads from Apple's server???

in the 6 or 7 hours since I last posted, I came back to find it had downloaded maybe another 400MB or so... still crawling along with only about 1.8GB downloaded total so far after about a day and a half of trying (and pressing pause then resume every once in a while). still showing over 1 day remaining

I paused the download once more, and following the discussion above about VPN, I installed Hotspot Shield VPN - it has a 3 day free trial, virtual location set to USA. Took only a minute or two to install, then when I resumed the OS download, it immediately picked up speed.

now showing less than 20 min to go

After reading the post about using VPN, I tried pausing the download, connecting to my work's VPN, and resuming it. It worked! I thought that was weird, so I paused the download, disconnected the VPN, and resumed. It was slow again. So I went back to using VPN, but it was just as slow. I ended up pausing and resuming it a bunch of times until it got fast again. So I'm guessing Apple has only so many servers, and they aren't distributing the load very well at all.
