Yosemite OS 10.10 Mail Memory Leak

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have ran out of memory (MacMini, 16 Gbytes) three or four times. I have traced this to Mail.app. The trigger seems to be when you drag multiple files into the email to have them included. Then, the memory usage starts racing, eventually using up all free memory within seconds. The only way to recover is to use Force Quit from the Activity Monitor, normal Quit from within Mail does not work. See the attached screenshot. By the time I grabbed the screen shot and pressed Force Quit, it was already up to 17 Gbytes of Memory.

Has anyone else came across this problem?

I'd had this problem when I first upgraded to Yosemite. I had been working on an email in a GoDaddy account before I upgraded, and so it was in draft form when I went to Yosemite. The problem began for me the first time I opened Mail. After doing a safe open on Mail and getting rid of that draft, the problem went away for me. After reading in this thread about the "draft on server" option, I disabled that for my GoDaddy email account just to be safe.

At one point, I re-enabled "draft on server" for that GoDaddy email account and began to work on a test mail just to see what would occur. I immediately got the run-away memory issue. I killed Mail, did the safe open trick, got rid of the draft and disabled "draft on server" for that account and had no more problems. I should point out that I left the server draft option enabled for iCloud, Gmail,and three other IMAP accounts that I run on my own VPS without any issues. It was only the single GoDaddy email account that I had the run-away memory deal.

After doing the 10.10.1 update yesterday, I re-enabled the drafts on server option for that GoDaddy account and I've sent several emails since then without any problems.

So far so good.

I updated as soon as 10.10.1 was available and have not seen the problem since. That being said, I have not had "Store draft messages..." enabled the entire time. I've recently re-enabled that feature and will report if I see any memory issues.

I'm now looking for a discussion involving Mail not reading new messages from my GoDaddy IMAP account. I (still) frequently have to quit and restart Mail to get new messages.

Yes, this is great news. Has anyone tried to see if this also fixes the problem with syncing or fetching new email? I will try this tonight since I have one go daddy email account that just won't sync the latest emails.

Please let me know if you find anything or start a new thread. I can't get my new email even when I restart or rebuild my mail. It has been a pain for quite sometime. I was hoping these two problems were related, but I guess not.

The one I started is titled, "Mail not fetching new messages from GoDaddy IMAP". I hope that's not too specific, but it seems to be that way in my case.

Yes so far 10.10.1 seems to have made the fix. I have been running mail since I did the update yesterday at 1PM and no crunching or memory issues. Look like the fix made the cut.

nope. still crashing on iCloud account. O365 account seemed also before the update to not be affected!

Only particular mails (from select number of senders) makes Mail.app fail on me!

Oh wow, Hi belviking. I'm not sure anyone in this Discussion ever had their iCloud email account failing, it seemed to be the GoDaddy IMAP accounts. Is your memory skyrocketing too causing the crash? Have you monitored using the Apple Activity Monitor app? Sorry to hear that. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Doren_Sean_Michael,

I thought I had seen non-GoDaddy mail accounts failing on this forum also?

The unfortunate reality is that 10.10.1 did not fix the issue. I have done all the recommendations which I have found on this and other fora like disabling Draft storage on server, etc. As soon as Mail crashes I open mail on iPhone to delete last message (from one or more specific sources and or with attachments) and restart Mail.app to continue working.

I do not see myself migrate to Outlook. Grrrr.

Ah, perhaps there have been, it's a long Discussion 😟 I wonder if you should start another Discussion with title of that one being " Yosemite OS 10.10.1 Mail Memory Leak"? Since the update didn't help you.

The constant cause is linked to mails coming from distribution lists (including 'Popular on Twitter') and this to both iCloud and Gmail accounts. I will try to solve the issue by unsubscribing to different distri's
