Yosemite OS 10.10 Mail Memory Leak

Everyone that was also having issues with their GoDaddy IMAP accounts no longer retrieving messages after updating to Yosemite, CTM has started a new Discussion. Please post your problems there as well and let's see if we can find a temporary solution like we did here and have Apple take notice once again and, hopefully, fix the issue. Thanks!

I concur, the update did not fix the problem. In my case the leak is slower and less severe, but still present. I have one GoDaddy IMAP account and cloud and "save drafts on server" disabled. To me it seems both accounts have the issue (if I take one offline and run the other the problem persists). Regarding migrating, I did in fact and am happily using Postbox, which also gives me the "Tags" feature I have always been missing in Mail (I know there is an extension program called mailtags) and I have come to like it a lot over the last weeks. Thank you for all the posts.

I've been curious about Postbox, but have been hesitant about trying it, mostly because of the lack of any included support. Only paid support. Not even a support forums. That put me off. I'm using Mailplane for now because of the Mail problems.

Hi all, just got off the phone with Apple Care. This is a known issue with Apple Engineers and they recognize it as an Apple issue. They are working on fix and will release when ready. No real workaround except freq quit reopen, use web mail or don't use Mail. I have a Media Temple account (which is now a Go Daddy company). I have done all the suggestions that work for some; none work for me. So, I have to do the Quit often or (ugh) use web mail for now.

not just cleaning out the drafts, but disabling "save drafts on cloud/server". If you only save drafts to "this mac" or whatever local folder, it stops hanging up syncing drafts. That was the big bug. The only remaining one is it will not always pull IMAP mail from my godaddy mail server regularly. I keep my iPad next to my monitor to see what comes in there and always comes in there until I right click the Inbox and select "Get Account Info", which cycles thru and usually unjams the waiting mail.

Not just a problem in the upgrades. I bought a new iMac 32 G Ram. Same thing happened day one with in hours.

Is this really a new problem? I've had issues with mail since installing Mavericks, I regularly have to force quit mail because the whole macbook freezes up so badly that I can't even look to see what's causing it. I even have to wait and watch that lovely spinning rainbow (I'm seeing it in my dreams now!) for the Force Quit window to open. A normal quit of mail does not work, but forcing it to close seems to wake everything up again. Therefore I assume it is mail that is eating my RAM.

Aluminium Macbook late 2008, with 4GB RAM - clearly this was not enough to install Mavericks on and I'm about to double it.

Yikes! Just completed my 24-hour saga into this mess.

My troubles started with a 1.8 GB attachment on my first attempt at using Mail Drop (I was so excited!) via Gmail. I ended up with a message in my Outbox that would initiate a paralyzing memory leak every single time I launched Mail (a familiar chorus in this thread).

Here are all the steps I eventually followed to resolve the issue:

1. After rebooting, I launched Mail into "Safe" mode (holding Shift while the app launched).
2. I went directly into Mail Preferences, clicked on the Accounts tab, and for each active account I disabled "Store draft messages on the server" on the Mailbox Behaviors tab.
3. I quit and relaunched Mail, again in Safe mode.
4. I clicked on "Outbox" and deleted the problem message.
5. I quit Mail (this took a long time) and then relaunched it, again in Safe mode. I confirmed that the message was gone.
6. Gah! The memory leak began again, with an error message from Google saying that a message was too large. Apparently, the bad message was still lurking in my mail sandbox. Fortunately, from one of my earlier attempts, I knew how to delete the sandbox:
7. Access the Go menu in the Finder with the Option key held down, and choose the menu item “Library”. In the Library folder, go to the Containers directory and find the folder called “com.apple.mail.” Open that folder, then the Data folder, then the Library folder. In the Library folder you'll see a folder called "Saved Application State." Delete that folder, and then relaunch Mail.

I have had this problem since upgrading to Yosemite. I have a brand new mac book pro with 16 gb of RAM and I have the same problem consistently when I have mail open for a while, even if I have nothing else open.

I am so glad to hear that it is not just me! Maybe Apple will get the message and fix this problem!

I started getting similar issues only after using mail drop for one of the mail attachments. I disabled mail drop feature for now and it works like a charm.

The mail app would would freeze every time I select the email which had the mail drop attachment. I deleted that email from the web login of my IMAP service provider.

I am sure apple should fix the problem with Mail drop. And also mail drop works in the background not giving a status bar for attachment being uploaded.

If you have multiple accounts in your mail i suggest going to Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Adavenced

and you will see the check box for " Send large attachment with Mail drop " disable by removing the tick on the checkbox.

Do this for all your accounts.

NOTE : The problem i faced was while using an IMAP account. May be my service provider does not yet support this feature. The mail drop feature might work for users using Icloud.com or me.com emails.

Was reading this thread because, like most others here too, I have also been bitten by this Yosemite bug (as well as a great many others, some just as ugly), when this nugget of comedy gold lightened my day:

I too am having this issue, which only started after I installed the 10.10.1 Yosemite update. Am going to try a mailbox rebuild.

Have had the same issues with mail.app going up to 64Gb (I have 16GB installed). It is doing this with my external map accounts (MS Exchange and UK2.net). Seems to have calmed down now that I have unchecked the store drafts on server for those accounts and also needed to uncheck filter junk mail.

Apple also confirmed to me that there are problems with Mail, my problems included in TimeMachine the Mail Subjects were not showing for Drafts but did with other folders... second was that you can drag a mail to the sidebar to a different folder and if the folder is below the line Mail will move down but it doesn't move up. One addition is the Contacts circle with either initials or picture and they removed the link if there are multiple messages (attachment).

I wonder why they released such a buggy application that is so vital to our computer use.
