Garageband was not able to install the new sounds

I'm on an iMac 21.5-inch (mid 2011) running Yosemite; 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5; 4GB memory.

A few months ago, I uninstalled GarageBand. Now I'm trying to reinstall it. I can get GarageBand 6 reinstalled, but I would like to get working with the latest version. I'm able to download the latest version from the App Store with no issue. It installs with no issue.

When I open it, it thanks for me downloading it, and then begins to download "an essential collection of sounds and loops." After a bit of downloading, it asks for my admin password; I enter it, and a few seconds later, it gives the error: "GarageBand was not able to install the new sounds. Close and re-open GarageBand to download and install them again." Closing and reopening GarageBand just takes me through the same loop (no pun intended). When the window is open, if I click on the GarageBand menu in the Apple bar, nothing happens.

It does not ask me to accept anything; I am signed into the App Store with the same Apple ID I have always used (it is the only one I have ever had, so that's not the issue). I am an admin on my Mac, so it's not a permissions issue. It's not a password issue either.

Things I have tried:

  • Rebooting into Safe Boot and opening from there; same issue.
  • Repaired permissions (it fixed oodles of things completely unrelated to GarageBand); same issue.
  • Creating a new admin profile and opening from there; it gives a different error, but the effect is the same.
  • Removed the program, trashed anything remotely related to GarageBand (preferences, folders, etc), emptied the trash, restarted the computer, reinstalled; same issue.
  • Installed GarageBand on top of itself, just in case; same issue.

I can't think of what else to try. Help!

For reference, here is a screenshot of what I'm getting stuck on:

leonie i went and checked the app store under purchased apps...it says garageband installed and there is no accept button..what to do now?

Which version are you trying to install? And which version is in your Applications folder? Can it be, that you have backup drives connected, with older GarageBAnd versions on the drive?

thanks leonie..will try that...also could you tell me how to access the /private/var/folders on my macbook pro? aim not able to find them anywhere! thanks again:)

The folder /private/var/folders is t a hidden part of the system. You can access it by opening $TMPDIR

Launch the Terminal.app fromm the folder Applications > Utilities and paste this into a Terminal window:

open $TMPDIR

This will open a Finder window, and you can browse the folder in the Finder and easily access the temporary files:

User uploaded file

Instead of deleting the folders, it is probably necessary to repair the permissions and the ownership for $TMPDIR, if the installer cannot remove the partial downloads on its own.

The command below will make you the owner of all files in your $TMPDIR: It will change the ownership to your user id. Copy and paste it into the Terminal. Make sure, it has been copied exactly as I posted it here. Any small typo in a sudo command can be dangerous.

sudo chown -R $UID $TMPDIR..

Thanks leonie!

This worked for me. I did have to restart at some point and I also had to restart Garage Band a couple of times.

Compatibility Update kept failing for me but I finally got it to work doing the install manually.

open Safari app

enter the following URL: http://audiocontentdownload.apple.com//lp9_ms2_content_2011/MGBContentCompatibil ity.pkg

after the download completes double click on the download file in your downloaded folder and follow the instructions.

Hope it helps. 🙂

Andy,

What does Compatibility Update do for you?

I'm in the situation where, even after paying the upgrade fee, I don't know if all of the Software Instruments that Apple is going to provide have been installed or not. Evidently, Apple previously provided a lot more Software Instruments with GarageBand than they currently do.

Were you able to get all of yours installed? If so, do you have now, for example, an Oboe software instrument installed?

I've discovered the most simple solution yet. I did some digging around in my downloaded but not yet installed file packages. It turns out that they wouldn't execute after download because of a JavaScript error. Turns out you need to install the latest version of Java on your Mac for the install to work. Crazy, given that Apple has stopped bundling Java with Mac OS X!!!!!. Go to the relevant Oracle page and download the latest version of Java and this ridiculous problem will be resolved.

Thank you. This is exactly what worked for me. I had to Force quit because it would get stuck in the install process and just hold. So I simply installed the latest Java JRE for Mac OS X 64-bit, and then I restarted Garageband to install the new sounds again. Worked like a charm and installed very quickly after the download. It finished with flying colors. So yeah, they kind of forgot to ensure you installed the latest Java before attempting to install the new sounds.

I was receiving this error as well. It didn't turn out to be anything to do with file permissions or Java. I had disabled Spotlight. Once I re-enabled it everything worked fine. It must be needed to index all the loop files. Indeed after the loops install a window pops up titled 'Indexing Apple Loops'.

So if you had disabled Spotlight by running 'launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist' you will have to re-enable it by running the same command except with 'load' instead of 'unload'.
