Yosemite slow on Macbook Air

Help! Seriously....

I updated to Yosemite the other day and since then my Macbook is extremely slow...

It is really annoying, especially because I have no clue what the reason could be.

I would really appreciate if anyone has an idea how to fix this.

Apple doesn´t seem to know the answer! (What a let down...)

Thank you very much for taking your time!

Some of the problems:
+ The fan is running much more often now

+ MacBook gets very warm

+ Battery drain is extremely high

+ Animations and scrolling inside OS not fluent anymore

I have already tried the following:

+ new install

+ verify disk permissions

+ SMC-Reset

+ PRAM Reset (Cmd+P+R)

Here comes my report, I really hope anyone can help me with that.

I am really disappointed of Apple... What a let down!

Sorry I can't help you, I just have the same problem with my MBPr 13" 2014. Some transition are laggy, and the whole system just feels unstable. For instance, even displaying the Application folder (docked) content uses more CPU than any other app, and the animation is slower than in Mavericks.

I did a fresh install (and even tried several times). Never had problems with this MBP before or my previous ones.

Hope we can find some solution..

I found something that helped me with the same problem. Read Frank C's response Folder Action Dispatcher I just turned disabled and re-enabled it. One thing to look for in Activity Monitor is to see what is causing it to run sluggish. In my activity monitor Folder Action Dispatcher was not responding and it said 40GB. I only have 8 GB on my MBP 2011. Hope this helps.

Had the same problem, finally realized that the FileVault Encryption was struck at 19%. Speed back up to normal after I disabled FileVault using terminal command - sudo fdesetup diable

To check whether the FileVault is the culprit, go to System Preferences --> Security & Privacy --> FileVault to see if encryption is in progress.. For me the blue bar was less than a quarter with status 'estimating time remaining'..

Then open Terminal and type in: sudo fdesetup disable

It will then ask for the admin password (to be it asked twice), then it was disabled... Back to normal life again..

Here is my terminal log for reference:

Last login: Tue Oct 21 23:05:13 on console

Gowthams-MBP:~ asgowtham$ fdesetup status

FileVault is On.

Encryption in progress: Percent completed = 18.80

My problem still exists. I looked at the above replies regarding "Folder actions" and "File vault" and neither apply in my case.

I am finding that at a reboot, performance is fine, but slowly degrades over a 24 hour period. swap is actually well within normal amounts, and no single process is eating all of the CPU cycles.

Still pondering on this one...

One thing that's worked for me so far was to turn off the translucency features in system preferences (System Preferences --> Accessibility --> Display --> Reduce Transparency). It does reduce some of the visual appeal of Yosemite, but I've noticed a sharp increases in responsiveness with gestures and windows.

Same for me on my mid 2013 Mba, i5, 4gb.

My main issues are : 1 - the transitions like expose that really become choppy when theres 3+ windows on the screen.

2 - swiping the notifications bar on is also really laggy

3 - scrolling in finder is a disaster

4- and just overall performance drops everywhere along with little glitches here and there.

What fixes it: These issues for the most part go away if i reduce the transparency in accessibility, but i shouldn't have to do that, its crazy how apple can release such an incomplete OS.
