launchd crashing Yosemite system OFTEN

Getting a crash on my MacPro many times a day. Totally restarts with 'kernel panic' type screen. Is anyone else getting this. Any ideas for solving?

Hi there Aikido-Man,

The article linked below provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting tips that will resolve most kernel panic issues like the launchd panic that you’re seeing on your MacPro.

OS X: About kernel panics

Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic

Diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you would like to avoid this process, or do not know how to perform any of the following steps, consider bringing the Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance. Be sure to ask that, if the drive needs reformatting or replacing, they contact you about escalating your case to a special data recovery service. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).

Tip: To help diagnose recurring kernel panics, record the date and time it occurs, and any information that appears with the kernel panic message.

  • Was the computer starting up, shutting down, or performing a particular task when the recurring kernel panic happened?
  • Is the kernel panic intermittent, or does it happen every time you do a certain thing?
  • Does it occur only when a certain external device is connected, or a device is connected to a certain port?

Isolate hardware or software as the cause of the kernel panic

  1. Start the Mac from Recovery or its install media. Note: If a kernel panic still occurs, go to the "Hardware troubleshooting" section of this article.
  2. Open Disk Utility and use "Repair Disk" on Mac's internal hard drive (named Macintosh HD by default).
  3. Important: If Disk Utility is unable to repair the internal drive, you should bring the Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store, or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for service and support.
  4. Connect an external drive with at least 10 GB of free space. Note: Make sure the external drive does not cause kernel panics and is the only device on its USB, FireWire, or Thunderbolt port. Connecting the external drive and its cables to another Mac can help make sure the drive does not cause kernel panics.
  5. Install OS X on the external drive.
  6. Start up from the external drive.
  7. Install all software updates until Software Update reports your software is up to date.
  8. Use the Apple applications on the external drive to surf the web, view QuickTime movies, email, print, scan, and/or other activities. Continue using the Mac for the amount of time it would usually take for the kernel panic to occur.
  9. If a panic occurs, go to the "Hardware troubleshooting" section of this article to further diagnose the issue.
  10. If a panic does not occur, go to the "Software troubleshooting" section of this article to further diagnose the issue.

I hope this helps,

-Jason

Hi Phingers,

I had this exact problem and this is how I fixed it. Please bear with me because I'm not a tech okay?

1. Go to "Activity Monitor" - you should see launchd using lots of CPU resources - and I think this is why it's crashing intermittently. The Mac is going nuts trying to launch something which it can't and it finally resets itself.

2. Go to "Console" and look up System Log Queries - All Messages - it's going to be pretty obvious what launchd is trying to er, launch. On my computer it was trying to launch this:

/Library/eBookLibrary/eBook Library Launcher.app/Contents/MacOS/eBook Library Launcher

3. Go to /Library/LaunchAgents - you will see the plist file that the launchd is trying to launch - in my case it was the Sony ebook reader plist. I deleted it without any problems.

4. Restart the system.

5. Go back to "Activity Monitor" - you should no longer see launchd hogging the resources.

Hopefully, that will fix the problem.

Cheers

Jacqueline

As fabmaple suggests, it were outdated OS X kernel extensions from third party apps that caused this crash in my case. I forgot about the apps that installed them, as I didn't use them anymore, but they were still active.

I followed the advice from this tutorial to find them from a terminal and completely uninstalled the respective programs:

kextstat | grep -v com.apple

Hi,

just wanna share my experiences on the issue.

I have fallen prey to kernel crashes like the ones outlined above as well once I switched from Mavericks to Yosemite.

In my case the problematic kernel extension was a Presonus FireStudio LightPipe driver that wasn't updated for Yosemite yet. With the old version installed I kept getting crashes in shorter and shorter intervals.

I went according to the article from 'exil-Fischkopp' on how to find any non-Apple-native extensions. I went on updating all of those. After the process the LightPipe driver was the only one which received a version update. The provider's page stated 'Yosemite compatible' for the new version. The one that was installed was older than that and was only suitable for up to Mavericks.

Until now and with the same user actions / behavior that caused the issue beforehand I haven't got any new crashes after the driver update. Hopefully, the LightPipe software was the crucial point. Otherwise I'm clueless...

Thanks,

M.

Hm, ... unfortunately that kernel extension wasn't the problem. I got another crash last night. After that I reset the PRAM and the SMC. I also got to know that I might be affected by a Video-Controller hardware issue. I'll have that one fixed and then let's again hope for the best that all those actions get me / us rid of those crashes...

Thanks,

M

IMHO it's got nothing to do with anything that complex. It's just plain bad OS design and instability due to the upgrade. It tends to fix itself over time (so I found by dint of trying). I ran into the same problem and it keeps coming and going and all my machines are brand new so it's nothing to do with hardware either. whenever I buy a new one (for my business) I run into the same problem.

My advice: don't panic, don't fix anything, don't touch anything. Use Onyx and clean your machine at least once a week until it improves. As soon as an OS upgrade is made available, upgrade your OS.

IOW, keep a stiff upper lip and wait until Yosemite is finally stable. As far as I can understand things, it might take a few more months. In a way I wish I had never upgraded from Mavericks which was incredibly stable and quick (mainly at startup).

Good luck

May 27, 2015 3:24 AM in response to ygourven

But I do have that video problem that even Apple has kinda confirmed already looking at my machine's serial number... Faulty OS or not, I want a clean hardware. If they find my MacBook to have that problematic logic board then it's to be replaced... If that one in turn introduces another issue, well, I'm gonna be their guest again. ;o)

Thanks,

M.
